As video and download can easily occupy a lot of bandwidth, for the stable operation of the network, most local area networks will impose a certain speed limit on the client. In this article, I will introduce how to set the speed limit according to the bandwidth and how reasonable the speed limit is.

1. How much is the speed limit reasonable?

For normal office Internet access, each terminal needs at least 2Mbit bandwidth; if the average value is lower than 2Mbit, you need to consider increasing the access bandwidth. Suppose you have the bandwidth of 200Mbit, with 50 terminals, then each terminal can be allocated 4Mbit on average, but considering that not everyone will download at full speed at the same time, you can allocate 8-10Mbit bandwidth to each terminal. As shown below:

This configuration means that everyone shares the bandwidth of 200Mbit, but each terminal downloads no more than 8Mbit.

It should be noted that ordinary broadband uploads and downloads are not equal. The download bandwidth of 200Mbit may only be 50Mbit or 20Mbit for upload. Therefore, the uplink bandwidth is relatively more valuable, and the uplink should be restricted separately. In the following figure, the uplink limit for a single IP is 2Mbit.

3. Do you want to limit the number of connections?

The limit on the number of connections can be more stringent on the terminal. in fact, in most cases, if the speed limit of the bandwidth has been made, there is no need to limit the number of connections. If it must be done, it is recommended to refer to the following values:

a)。 5 connections, you can open a chat software, or open a web page at the same time.

b)。 20 connections, chat plus normal web access, video and downloads are basically impossible.

c)。 100 connections for video and download.

Speed limit is a powerful tool to ensure the reasonable use of bandwidth, but the setting must not be careless. Only a reasonable speed limit setting can really play a role in optimizing the bandwidth.
