Earlier this year, Google introduced its real-time translation function (translation mode) to smart displays and speakers with assistant functions enabled. Now, this feature is being extended to Android and iOS phones with assistant features around the world.

Using translation mode, you can say, "Hey, Google, be my German translator" or "Hey, Google, help me speak Thai". The assistant will listen to the conversation and the translated transcript will appear on your phone. Assistants can provide suggestion responses through "smart reply" to make the conversation faster and smoother.

There is no doubt that translation mode is more useful on mobile phones than on smart monitors, especially with the help of the "translate" button on Google Maps, which was launched last month. Clicking this button will prompt Google to say the name and address of the place in the local language.

During a recent demonstration in New York, a Google executive raised a map on his mobile phone and chose a place in an imaginary place in Germany. He pressed the translate button and then popped up a panel showing the name and address of the place in German. He presses the speaker icon on the page, and the assistant reads the German message.

You can also focus on unfamiliar words. Lens checks the language and overwrites the translation on the original word. These features can make Google Assistant a more useful travel companion. When we tested the interpreter pattern on CES, it was a bit stubborn, but over time, we can expect continuous improvement.
