Oracle announced an agreement on Thursday to buy Talari Networks, a start-up in SD-WAN, but did not disclose the purchase price, a deal that will end this year. Talari's technology is expected to complement Oracle Communications's session border controller and network management infrastructure.

Focus on making Talari stand out

Founded in 2007 and headquartered in San Jose, California, Talari has raised $53.5 million in its history and has more than 500 customers.

Talari is also one of the first companies to provide SD-WAN technology, which allows IT administrators to implement private networks across the Internet without changing the network equipment system.

When a company has more and more branches around the world, the connection between video sharing applications and IP voice phone systems becomes very important. SD-WAN provides greater flexibility and efficiency, greatly reducing the business of MPLS networks and routers by improving application performance and security while reducing costs.

In September, Talari launched the Cloud Connect platform to distinguish it from many suppliers in the fast-growing market.

Talari also focuses on building so-called "fail-safe" networks to ensure high availability, reliability and security.

At the end of 2017, Talari hired Dell Technology veteran Patrick Sweeney as its CEO, strengthening its sales channels.

"by providing the company with a complete enterprise network solution to ensure the reliability and performance of real-time communications and mission-critical applications on any network, Oracle and Talari will jointly accelerate the digital transformation and cloud landing," the Oracle statement stressed.

Oracle occupies a place in the SD-WAN market through the acquisition of Talari.

Supplement to SD-WAN related acquisitions

Cisco Systems acquired Viptela in August 2017, introducing a more complex enterprise environment to complement Cisco Meraki branches.

In December 2017, VMware acquired VeloCloud.

HPE's Aruba,Cradlepoint,Aerohive, Juniper Networks and Riverbed Technologies are also vying for market position, as well as pure SD-WAN suppliers such as Aryaka and Silver Peak.

The market potential of SD-WAN is endless

IDC estimates that global SD-WAN infrastructure and services revenue will grow by 70 per cent a year, reaching more than $8 billion by 2021.

Gartner expects 30 per cent of companies to deploy SD-WAN technology in their branch offices by the end of 2019, compared with less than 1 per cent in 2015.

The online world has not changed much in the past decade, but the needs of enterprise networks and data centers are changing dramatically, including the migration to cloud services, a growing mobile workforce, and dramatic changes in the enterprise WAN network model.

Large companies like Oracle "are engulfing agile innovators and disruptors like Talari as a way to cross this new technology landscape."
