Mobile platform developers actively turned to 5G solutions, and shipments of 4G-only platforms began to decline. In response, the price of 4G solutions will begin to rise in the second half of 2021; chips that support 5G will become cheaper.

Mobile chipmakers MediaTek, Qualcomm and Ziguang Zhanrui are all actively promoting their latest 5G products. In addition, MediaTek and Qualcomm have completely updated their scope, covering all price ranges and supporting fifth-generation networks.

In view of the global shortage of semiconductor components, 4G solutions are now receiving less attention from manufacturers, suppliers and contractors, which has predictably pushed up the prices of such products. DigiTimes sources associated with Chinese handset makers say demand for devices to support fifth-generation networks is still high and shipments of 5G smartphones will double annually in the next two to three years.

At the same time, 4G networks remain a priority for many emerging markets. In this regard, 4G smartphones and related solutions have proved more profitable than ever before. By the end of 2021, 4G chips may be more marginal than platforms that support 5G.

Chinese mobile operators China Telecom, China Unicom and China Mobile reported results for the first half of 2021. It is possible to connect more than 500 million users to the fifth generation network.

British news website The Register clarified that as of the end of March 2021, China's three major mobile operators had 322 million 5G network subscribers and 1.12 million standard base stations. Over the past three months, the user base has increased significantly. As of June 30, the number of users has reached 495 million, and the number of base stations declared by operators has reached 1.421 million.

However, the impressive number of 5G base stations should be taken seriously, and in fact, it may be even less. Operators China Telecom and China Unicom have accelerated infrastructure sharing in the past six months under earlier agreements. In addition, such agreements involve fourth-and fifth-generation infrastructure. This means that the total figure is a bit overestimated in the 5G new base station installation report. Similarly, China Mobile and China Radio and Television Network Corporation operate on the 700 MHz band on shared network equipment.
