Facebook launched the feature for American users today after launching a voice call service for Canadian iPhone users earlier this month.

To send and receive voice calls, you need to install Facebook's stand-alone messenger application for iPhone. Then select the person you want to chat with, select the "I" button at the top right of the screen, and select "Free Voice call". Unfortunately, Android users only have the ability to send voice messages, which was previously launched in Canada.

Voice calls are an added convenience for Facebook users. Now, even if you don't know your friend's phone number, you can contact them, or you are in a place where your cell phone signal is unstable (but you have a stable Internet connection).

Although Facebook's upgrade has been surprisingly quiet, the significance of the move has not diminished. It allows companies to deal directly with popular VoIP applications such as Rebeit, Viber and Skype. Finally, the fewer reasons users have to leave the company's app, the better it will be for Facebook.

Although it is a bit awkward to use now, because a separate application is required, it can be expected that the voice call feature will eventually enter Facebook's main mobile app. We've seen Facebook introduce features that were first discovered in its Messenger app. Once Facebook has confidence in voice calling, it should be placed in a prominent position, rather than hidden in a vague menu.
