Is poor sleep affecting your daily routine? If you own an Apple Watch or iPhone, you can now figure this out with IBM Watson's SleepHealth sleep tracking app.

SleepHealth is the first product born out of IBM's Health Cloud project, which was launched last year in partnership with Apple and Johnson & Johnson to collect data for users, researchers and doctors using Apple's open-source ResearchKit and sensors in iOS devices. The SleepHealth app itself is a collaboration between IBM and the American Sleep Apnea Association to study the impact of sleep quality on productivity, alertness, medical problems, and overall health.

IBM uses motion/heart rate sensors in Apple Watch and iPhone to detect whether users are asleep and track changes in body position while sleeping. The app also features features such as a personal sleep gatekeeper and nap tracker developed specifically for Apple Watch to help users develop better sleep habits. When iOS 9.3 is released, SleepHealth will also take advantage of the new Night Shift feature to reduce light exposure before sleep, which is also the first ResearchKit app with similar features. To enable nonprofit health researchers to access data through the app, IBM will also launch Watson Health for ResearchKit on the Health Cloud project.

In addition to getting personal health advice, users can participate in the project by providing suggestions on research topics and survey questions. The data collected by SleepHealth is stored in Watson's Health Cloud to help researchers see if there are common patterns and problems with participants 'sleep. After years of data collection, the research team will be able to develop health interventions for sleep-related problems. It might, for example, create a sleep habit for athletes competing in training, help reduce fatigue at work, and even provide early detection of diseases such as Alzheimer's and mental health problems. If you want to participate, the app is already available for free download in the Apple App Store.(Eskimo)
