Backup preface

Even if database availability rents are deployed in the enterprise, regular database backup and recovery are basic skills that administrators should master.

WSB backs up and restores exchange, which is recommended in small-scale Exchange environments, and Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager or third-party tools such as NBU are recommended for large and medium-sized Exchange environments.

Backup consideration

Non-DAG environment

"when using WSB backups for non-DAG environments, consider the following:"

There is no need to disable VSS Writer in the Exchange server

Full backup using VSS

Full backup is recommended for the first backup

Automatic log cleanup is supported only for disk partition "volume" full backups, which is not supported by database file or folder backups. "therefore, you must select the entire initiator (the entire disk partition) where the Exchange database you want to back up is located, not just a folder that contains the Exchange database."

It is recommended that you deploy a backup plan, with the backup method set to incremental backup.

DAG environment

When using WSB backups in a DAG environment, note the following

Exchange 2013 does not support streaming backups of databases, only VSS backups.

After disabling VSS Writer in the Exchange server, you need to restart the Microsoft Exchange Replication replication service.

Windows Server Backup does not support DAG members to back up and restore DAG copies.

The replica status between DAG member servers needs to be synchronized.

The index state between DAG member servers is normal

Windows Server Backup only supports backup and restore of active databases.

Install windows Server Backup

After the default installation of Windows 2008 R2 is complete, the "windwos server backup" backup component is not installed and requires an Exchange administrator to install it manually. Open Server Manager, start the add roles and Features Wizard, open Features, select the Windows Server Backup component, and use the default installation. Installation is complete, it is recommended to restart the Exchange server.

Start the service

After the Exchange Server 2013 installation is complete, the default "Microsoft Exchange Server Extension for Windows Server Backup" is in the "Enable", "manual" state.

It is recommended to start the service in the application environment and set it to "automatic mode". When the mailbox database service is started, the service will be started automatically. The setting parameters are as follows:

DAG environment disables VSS Writer in Exchange server

In a non-DAG environment, it is not necessary to disable VSS Writer.

When you use WSB to back up servers in a DAG group in a DAG environment, you need to disable VSS Writer. Run the "regedit.exe" editor, open the registry, navigate to "HKEY_Local_Machine\ Software\ Microsoft\ Exchangeserver\ v15\ repaly\ parameters", create a new "DWORD" value named "EnableVssWriter", and set the value to "0".

Full backup of Exchange mailbox database

Take a non-DAG environment as an example, fully back up the Exchange mailbox library volume and verify the changes in the logs before and after the backup.

Verify the log before backup.

In this case, the Exchange database is deployed on disk E to see the number of current projects. Here, no screenshots are taken, because the number has been reduced because it has been backed up.

Verify the location of the Exchange database through the Powershell command:

Get-MailboxDatabase

Get-MailboxDatabase-Identity Mailbaox51 | fl * PATH*

The first command displays all available databases

The second command displays the database file and log path.

WSB full backup

This example takes backup schedule and backup to shared folder as examples. Back up the local volume, only the middle "specify target type", "specify backup time" and the follow-up is different, but the meaning is very clear, you can test it yourself.

Log in to the server as an Exchange administrator, open Server Manager, navigate to Storage, and open Windows Server Backup

Click the backup schedule function in the actions window on the right, and after the command is executed, start the backup schedule wizard

Click the next button to display the Select backup configuration dialog box as follows. In this example, instead of making an overall backup of the server, select Custom. In practical applications, it is recommended that you select the "whole server" option for the first backup, back up the server as a whole, and then deploy the backup plan.

Click the next button to display the Select items to back up dialog box as follows.

Click the Advanced Settings button, switch to the VSS Settings tab in Advanced Settings, and select VSS full backup as the backup method. After the backup is complete, Exchange automatically cuts off the transaction log and frees up disk space. If the transaction log cannot be truncated, the transaction log will grow very rapidly, resulting in a shortage of disk space.

Click the OK button to return to the Select items to backup dialog box. Click the add Project button and select the backup destination in the Select items dialog box. The original backup database is located on E disk and F disk, and select the entire target volume.

Click the OK button to return to the Select items to backup dialog box.

Click the next button to display the specify backup time dialog box. Stagger the peak period of work, this example sets the time once a day, the time is 1: 00 in the morning.

Click the next button to display the specify Target Type dialog box. Database backups can be stored on a volume local to the server or saved to a remote shared folder. In this example, select remote shared folder. If you select backup to Volume, it is recommended that you adjust the backup strategy to incremental backup after the first full backup. Configure incremental backup in "configure performance Settings".

Note: in general, Windows Server Backup does not allow backup results to be stored to the same volume as the source data.

If you want to save to the source data volume, you need to add a health value named "AllowSSBToAnyVolume" in the server's "HKEY_Local_Machine\ System\ CurrentControlSet\ Services\ webengine\ SystemStateBackup". The health value type is "DWORD" and the health value is "1".

Click the next button

Click OK to display the specify remote shared folder dialog box. At location, enter the shared folder path

Backup to a shared folder cannot support incremental backups. The new backup will overwrite the original backup and keep only the latest one.

Click the "next" button to display the input password, dialog box, and enter the user name and password that can access the share

Click OK, and the confirmation dialog box appears.

Click the finish button

Click the close button. In fact, the backup has been completed here, but consider that in some cases, many enterprises back up directly to the local disk or NAS/SAN storage device, their backup method: full backup + incremental backup, so how to adjust the backup mode to incremental backup? Please see below.

Adjust the backup mode

WSB default backup method is "full" backup, if the Exchange database is large, the full backup process will be longer, so the Exchange administrator can change the backup method to "incremental" backup.

Open the WSB console, click the configure performance Settings link in the actions pane on the right, and after the command is executed, open the optimize backup performance dialog box.

Select the Custom option, the backup target in this example is Exchange (E:), click the drop-down button to the right of backup options, and select the incremental backup option from the pop-up menu. Click the OK button to complete the parameter settings.

Note: shared folder backup mode, incremental backup is not supported.

If you are not backing up to a shared folder, but on a local disk or a plug-in disk, you can adjust the backup mode to incremental backup.

Verify the log after backup

After the backup of the WSB system volume is complete, open the target folder where the Exchange database is located, and verify the number of logs after the backup is successful. If the quantity is much less than before, it means success.
