Dell R730 server, with 7 5t hard drives, RAID5 by default. Our goal is to take 6 of these hard drives for RAID5 and leave one hard drive for hot standby. A SSD system disk.

The use of hot spares

The hot spare hard disk in the RAID array hard disk has no data, and its function is to automatically replace the damaged hard disk when the hard disk in the RAID is damaged. If you take the hot spare hard drive to other machines that do not make an array, it will only be an empty disk.

Here, let me explain in detail.

① 6 hard drives are made into RAID5

② 6 hard drives as RAID5 and one hard disk as hot spare

The difference between the two configurations. Everyone should know that RAID5 needs at least three hard drives, one of which is used for data redundancy. If a hard disk on the RAID5 server is broken, then we need to remove the bad disk and replace it with a new hard disk, and the system will automatically synchronize the data. Here we take out a hard disk as a hot spare, when a hard disk on the server is broken, the system will automatically connect the hot spare, then isolate the broken hard disk, and then synchronize the data, which reduces the process of human operation.

The specific steps are as follows:

Start the server first, and press ctrl+r at the [Pressto Run Configuration Utility] prompt

(all you have to do is press like a tiger.)

The interface shown in the following figure appears. Move the cursor over the virtual disk and you can see that the current four hard drives have been made into RAID5.

Here, it does not meet our three hard drives to do RAID5, one hard disk to do hot backup requirements, to delete the default RAID5, do it again. Move the cursor to [VirtualDisk 0] to select the virtual disk, press F2, and then select [delete VD] to delete the virtual disk.

The following is the deleted interface, and you will find that there is nothing left.

In [No Configuration Present!] Press F2 and select [Create NewVD] to create a new virtual disk

Here is the interface for creating a new virtual disk

Select RAID5 in the RAID level, then tick the three disks, and OK determines

From the picture below, we can see that three hard drives are made into a virtual disk.

We press [ctrl+N] to change to the next page and see that there is still the last disk unused.

We move the cursor over the last hard drive, press F2, select [Make Global HS], and then make sure

When we go back to the home page, we see that there is already a hot backup.

Finally, initialize RAID, move the cursor over the virtual disk, press F2 to select [Initialzation] [Start Init.]

The above picture is I draw lessons from the previous article, my local configuration is 7 5T hard drives, 1 500gSSD, of which 6 raid5, a hot backup. Initialization took 20 + hours.

Some people ask whether it is all right not to initialize, of course. But there may be a lot of problems in the future.

Initialization requires a check of the entire hard disk, which is equivalent to a low grid of all disks, which takes too long, so manufacturers adopt a technology called background initialization, so that after building a Raid array, you do not have to wait for initialization to be completed, such as partitioning and formatting, but the system still checks the disk in the background, when the hard disk IO operation is very frequent, resulting in poor disk performance.

In other words, I either wait more than ten hours for the system to complete initialization, or put up with poor disk performance and wait for the entire column of disks to be initialized over a period of time.

So it is recommended that you initialize it!
