Today, Microsoft is preparing to extend the next feature update of Windows 11 to Insider Program's Beta channel. This means one thing: it's time to check your channel. If you want to migrate from Dev to Beta, you can do so for the first time in a while. If you want to switch from Beta to Release Preview or production, this is your last chance.

That's how it works. The Dev channel is used to test new features that are independent of specific feature updates. They can do it in the next update, a later update, or they can be completely scrapped. You are also at the forefront, so you may sacrifice system stability.

The Beta channel is used to test functional updates that are closer to the actual release. The fact that Windows 11 build 22581 entered the Beta channel indicates that this is the next feature update for the operating system, even if it is not the final version. As mentioned earlier, the version number is 22H2. Eventually, the Beta channel will switch to using cumulative updates to provide services, while the Dev channel will still get a pre-release version.

Finally, the Release Preview channel is dedicated to updates that are expected to be released as is. These are usually previews of cumulative updates, but you will see the latest feature updates in Release Preview a few weeks before the release.

Why is it important to check your channel now?

The way Windows updates work is very simple. Your computer has a specific build number, and when it checks for updates, it basically sends that build number to the server. If the version number is lower than the version number on the server, the server sends you a newer version.

This means that you will never get updates that take you back to previous versions of Windows. Unless the previous version is stored on your PC, the only way to do this is to install the operating system completely. This may not be what you want to do.
