What is the relationship between the new Leaf-Spine network architecture and the traditional EoR/MoR/ToR network architecture?

The new Leaf-Spine leaf ridge topology network structure (distributed core network structure) is developed under the background of high data transmission applications such as cloud computing and big data. The implementation of cloud computing and big data needs a lot of virtualization technology, which needs a lot of data to support. Under the traditional north-south three-tier network architecture, the implementation of virtualization technology needs a large amount of data. Virtualization technology brings great pressure to the backbone link, and the bottleneck of transmission to the upper layer is more obvious. Although increasing the bandwidth of each switching layer helps to improve the transmission congestion of the traditional structure network, the beneficiary nodes are still independent. By adding horizontal (east-west) network structure to each layer of network structure, Leaf-Spine ridge topology adds corresponding switching networks between the horizontal networks of this layer, and data from different servers is transmitted under any path between Leaf switches, Spine switches and core Spine switches according to actual needs, thus solving the transmission bottleneck of horizontal network connections under the traditional three-layer network structure. It provides a high degree of scalability for the entire data center network, and can adapt to almost all large, small and medium-sized data centers.

Thus it can be seen that the new Leaf-Spine network architecture is actually the optimization of various network architectures of the traditional EoR/MoR/ToR. No matter what the traditional network architecture is in the vertical (north-south) of the network, the network architecture can be optimized into a new network architecture of Leaf-Spine by adding horizontal (east-west) switching networks in each switching layer. It is worth noting that the integrated cabling under the new Leaf-Spine network structure is more complex, especially as the number of backbone links connecting all the core switches is greatly increased, the system puts forward higher requirements for the data transmission capacity and stability of the backbone links. Whether using EOR/MOR or TOR integrated cabling, the convenience and reliability of maintenance and management should be considered.
