Peppermint (literally translated as Peppermint) is a lightweight Lubuntu-based distribution with LXDE as the default desktop environment. Peppermint aims to create an efficient and easy-to-use Web-centric operating system (such as Chrome OS, Ubuntu Netbook Remix, etc.) and to provide users with a sense of familiarity with everyday content.
Peppermint team announced the release of Peppermint 9 a few days ago. This version is based on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (long-term support) and still offers images in both 64-bit and 32-bit versions. This major version upgrade has obviously brought about a lot of changes. Some of the significant changes are as follows:
replace lxrandr with xfce4-display-setttings as the monitor setup tool, as Peppermint continues to look for better options to add functionality without adding weight, and continues to migrate from the few remaining LXDE components.
according to the user's request, the Menulibre menu editor is now installed by default and does not break the menu as in previous Peppermint versions.
continue to improve the theme of menu and startup management, and now the desktop right-click menu contains the "create a new initiator here" option.
Nemo File Manager now has a right-click menu item for "send by email" (this feature requires the installation of mail clients such as Thunderbird).
the Panel reset feature in the settings panel no longer requires the user to log out of the current session.
the Xfce Panel Switch (Panel switching) tool is installed by default, so users can now back up / restore any custom panel configurations and switch between them. It includes the default configuration file for Peppermint-9 and other related configurations.
system notification settings (in the settings panel) now have do not Disturb, or notifications can be enabled / disabled on a per-application basis.
Qt applications such as VLC now follow the system Gtk theme.
the Gtk overlapping scroll bar is enabled by default, which becomes more common in Peppermint.
Peppermint 9 now has both the commonly used Mintinstall Software Manager and GNOME Software (GNOME Software Center) for the convenience of users who need Snaps / Flatpaks. In its common favorites location, you can find GNOME Software in the following location: menu > system > Software
htop works right out of the box and has its own menu items.
the screenshot tool has been switched from pyshot to xfce4-screenshooter.
the symbolic link has been properly set, so any installed Snaps / Flatpaks will now appear in the main menu.
introduce a new "position mouse cursor" keyboard shortcut (Alt + C)
Chromium web browser has been replaced by Firefox (but throw may be changed again)
based on Arc's new Gtk theme, but contains some adjustments and additional color options, including the default red.
New artwork provided by Karl Schneider (works of art, usually wallpaper, icons and other graphic works of art).
the new Microsoft Office Online SSB.
the new Skye Web client SSB. This is mainly for 32-bit users because Microsof t no longer provides a 32-bit native Skype client for Linux.
ICE now has some international translations (and will get more translations over time through updates), and it has also been modified to remove the 'half' green lock symbol displayed on the SSL site.
Kernel is now 4.15 series (4.15.0-23 on ISO)
Nemo File Manager is now version 3.6.5
We now go back to the upstream Gdebi version of Ubuntu, which has an uninstall option (not in previous versions).
Peppermint 9 is now the 18.04 LTS code base, so you can access all the latest software.
details or other changes can be found in its announcement.
Peppermint OS comes with a traditional desktop, but with few native applications. Peppermint OS is unique in that it provides a tool for integrating Web-based applications (or ordinary web pages, but less experienced) into the desktop-Peppermint Ice, which allows users to create pseudo-native applications called SSB (Site-Specific Browser, that is, site-specific browsers). Then, when using the application, users do not need to open the browser first and then access it. The created SSB provides a separate browser window integrated with the desktop, and sets the corresponding .desktop file. SSB supports Chromium, Vivaldi, Firefox and Chrome as backends, and supports custom application icons. It is worth mentioning that the sessions of each application of Ice can be independent of each other.
this approach looks a bit like Hermit, an app under the Android operating system, which allows users to specify links to create a "Lite App", and Progressive Web Apps, launched by Google, which is offered by website controllers. The effects of the two are similar, will generate an application icon in the main interface, users can directly click the icon to access the corresponding Web application, and through this way to access the application, users will have a certain immersive experience.

Ice is also ported to a number of other distributions. For example, Arch User Repository contains the ice-ssb package.
