In my opinion, the prosperity and development of a technological ecology must have extensive investment, extensive participation and extensive attention, all of which are indispensable. In 2019, all three were unexpectedly available at the same time.

Extensive investment refers to the omni-directional investment from all angles, industries and roles. To put it bluntly, this investment refers to the main money in the direction of the database.

The 40 years of development of domestic databases originated from the guidance, support and support of the country. At this stage, the research and development of domestic databases began in colleges and universities. Until today, several major database companies originating from colleges and universities are still important participating forces in domestic databases, which are people's Congress Jincang, Wuhan Dameng, China General purpose and Nanjing University General purpose. However, only the national support, the investment of colleges and universities is not enough, whether it is the lack of academic genes, market, or ecological support, all make the development of a single database difficult.

Whether it is independent research and development, or with the help of open source, the Internet has solved the problem of its own application, and relying on the cloud platform, launched the application promotion of cloud database. Among them, Alibaba's OceanBase, PolarDB, Tencent's TDSQL, TBase, etc., have become the core weapons that can be used and stabilized.

Another thriving force in the database field is the emerging independent database start-ups. As the future of the industry is eye-catching, capital begins to favor this industry. Huawei launched GaussDB in 2019, ZTE launched GoldenDB, and Tide launched K-DB. The intervention of head technology enterprises, which are well versed in enterprise-level service, has completely eliminated the gap between database and commercial market operation, and ushered in an era of accelerated running.

Extensive participation means that when the database field has obtained different dimensions of input and support from all angles, the market presents a product ecology in which a hundred flowers blossom, but when there are available products, the most important thing is to have the extensive participation of database ecological manufacturers, such as software development enterprises, ecological tool enterprises, service support enterprises, end-enterprise users and so on. To put it bluntly, extensive participation requires auxiliary investment and spending money on the periphery.

The success of database products must depend on the spontaneous participation and application of traditional enterprises. Relying solely on national support or compulsory promotion, it is impossible to create a good and sustainable product ecology. For database products, the key to success is that there must be spontaneous and active support from applications from various industries. Once the active demand of enterprises becomes the norm, the domestic database will certainly be able to flourish for a long time.

At Huawei's HC conference in September, I participated in a closed-door database seminar organized by Huawei, in which one of the experts criticized domestic databases for being unusable. Yes, if you ask whether the domestic database (which only refers to the OLTP I am familiar with) is easy to use compared with Oracle, it must not be easy to use. When I came into contact with Oracle database 20 years ago, I also encountered a lot of problems. Today, many people who ask questions on Motian Wheel will also say that Oracle is not easy to use in many places, but because Oracle has built a very good ecosystem and trained a large number of professional engineers, users can find support and solve problems when they encounter problems, thus ensuring the operation of users' business.

Therefore, the development of domestic databases must require the extensive participation of different roles, including manufacturers to develop application software based on domestic databases, third parties to provide services for domestic databases, institutions to train and transport talents for domestic databases, and investors to tolerate the trial and error growth of domestic databases. Only in this way can domestic databases wrestle less and run fast!

The development of domestic databases must be based on the whole army, and any unilateral efforts are weak. Today, 2019, this is the best opportunity for China's database to start.

I remember deeply that Yang Zhenkun, the teacher of OceanBase, would say with glowing eyes every time he communicated with him: today's China is the best time for database people!

In the past 40 years, the backbone of the database field is becoming a staunch supporter of domestic databases, including supporters from various fields and roles.

Alibaba Alibaba, head of the database division, Li Feifei, is the outstanding scientist announced by the American computer Association (ACM) in 2018, the global leader in the field of database and the chief scientist of the Dharma Institute database.

CTO, Wang Tao, co-founder of Giant Sequoia Database, has worked for IBM DB2 Lab in North America for many years and is a member of the core R & D team of DB2.
