Shulou(Shulou.com)06/01 Report--
Today, I will talk to you about whether Linux 5.13 will remove the related code supported by WiMAX. Many people may not know much about it. In order to make you understand better, the editor has summarized the following content for you. I hope you can get something according to this article.
In Linux 5.11, the Linux kernel downgraded the code related to WiMAX network support to a "staging" area in the kernel and plans to remove it completely in the future. Now, it has been officially confirmed that WiMAX support will be removed with the release of Linux 5.13.
WiMAX (Global Interoperability Microwave access, Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) is a high-speed wireless data network standard, mainly used in metropolitan area networks, proposed by the WiMAX Forum and formed in June 2001. WiMAX can provide a variety of application services, including last-mile wireless broadband access, hotspots, mobile backhaul lines, and high-speed connections between enterprises for commercial purposes. Products that pass the WiMAX conformance test are able to create wireless connections to each other and send Internet packet data. Conceptually, it is similar to WiFi,WiMAX with faster transmission rate and wider transmission range, which is simply understood as an extended WiFi.
The bandwidth and transmission distance achieved by WiMAX make it have the potential to provide the following service applications:
Provide portable mobile broadband connections across cities and countries through a variety of devices
Wireless alternatives to cable television and digital subscriber line (DSL) for "last mile" broadband access
Provide data, telecommunications (VoIP) and IPTV services (triple play)
Long-distance communication: radio waves have a long transmission distance, so the coverage is better.
Provide Internet connectivity as part of the business continuity plan.
At that time, IEEE 802.16/WiMAX was a promising technology with broad prospects. But today, not many people around the world are using this technology. Even WiMAX Forum's own certified product registry has been off the shelves for some time.
Although Intel is not as involved in maintenance as it used to be, the WiMAX infrastructure and Intel i2400m drivers have been in the mainline Linux kernel for many years. After several months in the staging area of the kernel, the WiMAX was still not further maintained, so it was officially decided to remove the code from the Linux kernel.
Greg Kroah-Hartman, the maintainer of the Linux staging area, has added the WiMAX removal code to the merge queue in the submission of Linux 5.13. In the submission, he wrote: "the WiMAX code is dead and there are no known users. It has been in the temporary storage area for five months, and no one is willing to take care of the maintenance and support of the code base in the process, so let's delete it completely now. If anyone wants to restore it in the future, simply restore this patch."
Removing code that is no longer maintained can save about 15, 000 lines of code from the Linux kernel.
After reading the above, do you have any further understanding of whether Linux 5.13 will remove the code supported by WiMAX? If you want to know more knowledge or related content, please follow the industry information channel, thank you for your support.
