Ericsson and AWS announced overnight at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona that they will jointly research and launch a hybrid cloud center for global telecom service providers, and Telstra will be the first cooperative host.

Ericsson's goal is to leverage AWS's industry expertise to expand its cloud initiatives, data center and application migration solutions, and to accelerate the adoption of cloud computing by telecom operators in preparation for 5G and the Internet of things (IoT).

As part of the agreement, Ericsson will select a group of cloud experts from its 25000 R & D staff, including project directors, solution architects and systems engineers, who will receive training in AWS and Ericsson Cloud technology.

"AWS is a global leader in cloud computing with a highly reliable, scalable and secure global infrastructure," explains Anders Lindblad, head of Cloud and IP, Ericsson's business unit.

"Ericsson has been adopting great ideas, industrializing them and spreading them to every country. Based on the AWS platform, we will bring new growth opportunities to the entire service provider industry."

AWS will provide services, training, and solution architects for the project. Ericsson will use these resources to create and provide cloud-based solutions, such as end-to-end data security across clouds; data traffic management across AWS clouds, on-site infrastructure and mobile networks; cloud and workload management for AWS and on-site infrastructure; and gateway services to maintain localization regulations and compliance requirements for AWS storage services used by telecom companies.

Ericsson will set up cloud innovation centers around the world, and Telstra will be the first operator to jointly host cloud innovation centers. The centre will be part of the Australian telecom provider Glois Innovation Laboratory in Melbourne, which was launched last August.

Through the open source platform-as-a-service (PaaS) cloud software provided by Key and the Cloud Computing Center, Gurrowa provides space for Telstra and its related corporate customers, suppliers, research institutions and incubators to jointly create and cooperate in geolocation, robotics, Internet of things and other technology projects.

Vishnd Lall, chief technology officer of Telstra, said on Monday that Telstra has been working to create secure hybrid cloud services for enterprises, and Ericsson and AWS provide the means to achieve this.

"the industry is moving to an architecture driven by cloud economy and flexibility. Adopting a hybrid cloud requires a secure transport network that connects sites to the cloud and provides a regulatory chain for mission-critical enterprise data," Nandlall said.

"Telstra's vision is to build reliable web services for mission-critical cloud data. We are more than happy to work with Ericsson and AWS to explore opportunities to make this vision a reality." Gurrowa's Cloud Innovation Center intends to bring together Ericsson, AWS and Telstra cloud experts to encourage the adoption of cloud technologies and to develop new business opportunities for Telstra and our customers.'

Telstra and Ericsson announced at the 2016 Mobile Conference on Sunday night that Telstra's 5G network would be piloted during the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

Telstra's team of network engineers will be temporarily transferred to Ericsson's research lab in Sweden for six months to work together to collect data and build mathematical models of radio signals for the 5G radio spectrum.

The engineering team will use this data to develop a radio model for the Australian network environment as part of the international 5G standardization process.

In a test lab in Sweden, Telstra and Ericsson conduct 5G tests in the real world, using the high-frequency "millibar" spectrum, faster than 11Gbps. Field testing in Australia will be conducted at the end of 2016.

"We are very pleased to support the evolution of Telstra to 5G through the deployment of advanced radio technologies (11Gbps, MIMO and beamforming) and the provision of off-the-shelf core networks through NFV and SDN technologies," said Emilio Romeo, head of Ericsson and New Zealand.

"the virtualization and SDN of the 5G core network not only prepare 5G, but also provide the flexibility, programmability and agility needed to effectively provide customized network slicing and improvements for today's 4G consumer and enterprise customers. Media access and compelling Internet of things solutions."

Telstra and Ericsson announced their 5G network at Mobile World Congress 2015 and subsequently confirmed that they would launch 5G network in 2020.

The network is expected to provide speeds up to 10GB/s.

Ericsson also announced on Sunday night that it had partnered with SingTel Singtel to enable the Internet of things for SingTel's 4G network, including narrowband technology testing in the second half of 2016.

In the Internet of things, use available narrow-band, low-power, long-distance and wide-area networks instead of cellular networks. Unauthorized radio spectrum allows for greater coverage, shorter complex devices, and longer battery life, which means connecting more devices.

Ericsson says it expects to have 28 billion connected devices by 2021. Sam Saba, head of Ericsson and Oceania, said the devices needed longer battery life and better coverage, including temperature, air quality and flood sensors.
