Spanish satellite telecom operator Sateliot signed a cooperation agreement with Danish satellite telecommunications provider GateHouse Telecom.
Under the terms of the partnership, the two companies will develop the world's first space-based narrowband Internet of things (NB-IoT) network, which can provide 5G connectivity in remote areas with limited or no coverage.
Specifically, GateHouse will provide NB-IoT connection technology for Sateliot's space-based NB-IoT network. This technology will allow Internet of things terminals to send and receive data from ground and space-based networks. As a result, Sateliot will be able to provide complete connectivity to Internet of things devices in remote parts of the world.
"only 10 per cent of the earth's ground covers mobile coverage, and in the remaining 90 per cent, our new generation of 5G infrastructure will play a role. With our network, we can complement traditional telecom operators that will provide 5G connectivity to a growing number of Internet of things devices in remote areas, such as the Arctic or the Australian interior," said Jaume Sanpera, chief executive of Sateliot.
Earlier this year, GateHouse Telecom signed a contract with the European Space Agency (ESA) to develop a solution that extends the existing NB-IoT protocol to implement a space-based NB-IoT network, thereby enhancing the potential of Internet of things services.
"coupled with the existing software-defined radio payload and its application on Leo satellites, NB-IoT can expand the network to provide complete seamless connectivity in remote areas of the planet. Most importantly, NB-IoT also provides very low power consumption and low equipment costs," added Michael Bondo Andersen, CEO of GateHouse.
"our ambition is to develop the first standard connectivity technology for space-based NB-IoT, and the new partnership with Sateliot is an important step towards this goal. Therefore, we hope that our solution will provide a roadmap for future 5G networks for areas with little or no coverage."
The network is expected to be operational by the end of 2022.
