Check whether the AIX is 32-bit or 64-bit. Switching between 64-bit and 32-bit kernels in AIX 5L5.1

AIX 5L 5.1, RS/6000, pSeries

Question: how to switch between 64-bit and 32-bit kernels in AIX 5L 5.1

Answer: first, use the following command to determine which kernel is currently being used:

# ls-l / unix

Lrwxrwxrwx 1 root system 21 May 06 2001 / unix->; / usr/lib/boot/unix_mp

Is a 32-bit kernel.

# ls-l / unix

Lrwxrwxrwx 1 root system 21 May 06 2001 / unix->; / usr/lib/boot/unix_64

Is a 64-bit kernel.

Check to see if a package of 64-bit kernel (bos.mp64) or 32-bit kernel (bos.mp) is installed.

If it is not installed, it can be installed from the AIX 5L operating system CD.

(1) convert a 32-bit kernel into a 64-bit kernel.

Ln-sf / usr/lib/boot/unix_64 / unix

Ln-sf / usr/lib/boot/unix_64 / usr/lib/boot/unix

Bosboot-ad / dev/ipldevice

Shutdown-Fr

(2) transform 64-bit kernel into 32-bit kernel.

Ln-sf / usr/lib/boot/unix_mp / unix

Shutdown-Fr

Note: a 64-bit kernel cannot be used for a 32-bit system, but a 32-bit kernel can be used for a 64-bit system.
