How to understand the harm of Linux and UNIX viruses, I believe that many inexperienced people are helpless about this, this article summarizes the causes of the problem and solutions, through this article I hope you can solve this problem.
Not long ago, many system administrators swore that Linux and other Unix-based platforms were virtually invulnerable to viruses and worms. I don't know why they are so confident about their threat analysis, especially since the first large worm was invented by Robert Morris in 1988 and released in Unix systems using the Sendmail program. My guess is that everyone has become obsessed with criticizing Microsoft's operating system and software, which has become the target of more and more virus makers, while they forget about vulnerabilities on Unix.
Linux/Unix threats
With the announcement of Klez infection on Linux, antivirus software vendors are beginning to remind us that Microsoft's operating system is no longer the only one vulnerable to viruses. Even though users of Linux and some other major Unix platforms may not be big users of Microsoft bundled applications and cannot cause virus proliferation through them, Linux and Unix still have their own unobtrusive vulnerabilities.
Other than Klez, the main threats to Linux/Unix platforms are Lion.worm, OSF.8759, Slapper, Scalper, Linux.Svat, and BoXPoison, which are rarely mentioned.
I remember participating in a security audit project conducted by Europe's largest financial institution two years ago, when I heard a prominent security expert tell the auditor that Unix was not vulnerable to viruses. The auditor simply says "okay" and notes that "Unix systems are virus-safe." That era is over, and you can now expect security auditors and IT security teams to have a strong need for virus policies on Unix platforms.
An Austrian student named Alexander Bartolich has even written a guide on how to write ELF viruses for Linux. Bartolich doesn't ask to be a Linux virus pioneer, he says, but rather more effectively illustrates and reflects better ways for viruses, worms, and Trojans to threaten Linux, which have long been illustrated elsewhere. With such enlightening, web-published documentation, the number of Unix-based viruses will only grow faster, especially since Linux becomes more widely used in the server world. System administrators may wish that after reading that guide for themselves, their understanding of Linux viruses would take a leap forward and they would be able to better understand Linux vulnerabilities.
Viruses are created by hackers who know how to write code, and they are far more dangerous than hackers who tamper with websites but know little about writing viruses. Although a hacked site can be fixed quickly, viruses are more subtle and pose a potential security risk. You may not believe it, but the virus lurks until it does irreparable damage to the system.
