Asustek players are always flashy, always red, and usually very good. So, with its new zephyrus model, we expect great things, especially considering that previous iterations are very powerful for its shape.

"s" stands for frivolity, but if we compare it with a wider range of ultra-thin laptops, this is not the case. Slightly thinner than today's MacBook Pro, but thicker than MacBook Air. But this can be expected, especially given the level of equipment under the hood.

Don't be intimidated by the game brand-the hardware needed in the workplace gets the job done without delay, which is exactly what Zephyrus does.

Asustek ROG Xifeng S: design.

Many game laptops are full of RGB, which makes no difference, but don't let it discourage you. Although its RGB functions are common, they are not bright enough to distract you from the screen. If you want to take it seriously in the office, you can turn it off easily.

The beast of the computer is fitted into a black chassis; half of the lid, frame and keyboard are matte, while the other parts are smooth and glossy (though plastic y-shaped). Although the laptop does not look as smooth or polished as the MacBook Pro, it is by no means an ugly duckling. The contrast is very good, and the all-black color matching exudes a sense of professionalism.

In terms of size, this machine is quite large and is especially suitable for ultra-thin notebook computers. With a width of 310mm and a thickness of 157mm, it is by no means ultra-portable, but it is still significantly thinner than its predecessor (179mm thick), and Asustek will not let the model walk to the t runway without dieting-it is also 100g lighter. It is thinner than Razer Blade 15, with a size of 17.3 mm and only 2 mm compared to the expensive MacBook Pro.

The exposed space above the keyboard is also obvious-there is a slight ventilation point between the top of the keyboard and the bottom of the screen, reserved for GPU. The touchpad is located on the right side of the keyboard, not below the keyboard, which may be a necessary space saving measure to accommodate the GPU vents.

When talking about design, we have to mention the expandable chassis. Yes, you are not mistaken; when the lid is opened, the base of the equipment is also opened. The foldable panel at the bottom of the mainframe forms a cooling hole that is traditionally larger than any type of laptop. This is a good feature to prevent the machine's fans from spinning as loudly as some other high-performance laptops-a common annoyance, usually difficult and poorly ventilated game laptops.

Asustek ROG West Wind S: keyboard and touchpad.

The keyboard has nothing to say; it is a standard membrane model that Asustek claims can withstand 20 million keystrokes before the problem begins. Typing is good, but there is nothing to write about. If you are enjoying a wonderful typing experience, the latest generation of MacBook Air and Pro will be your way to use the sacred new butterfly keys.

A small problem with our keyboard is that it may be to save depth and no wrist bracket, so if this is what you need, you'd better have some extra desktop space. Fortunately, because the machine is so slim, the desktop provides comfortable support without tilting the wrist too far up to touch all the keys.

The touchpad is a little small, but it is still very practical. Once you have mastered them, multi-touch gestures work well, making awkward positioning more acceptable. It is also used as a traditional numeric keyboard. Just press the button and a glowing numeric keypad appears on the surface. If you ask us, this is a very cool supplement. The only drawback (for some) is that the touchpad is on the right side of the keyboard, leaving some short-term changes.

This laptop is equipped with a free Asustek ROG Strix Impact optical mouse. Although it is small, it feels good. We absolutely recommend using it as much as possible, because the touchpad looks small, so in some cases, moving the cursor from one side of the screen to the other may require some sliding.

Asustek ROG West Wind S: monitor.

Zeus'15-inch display. Very good. You won't hate it, it's still a good monitor-it's just not suitable for editing videos or images. We don't want to watch a movie on it-it's a little dark and the color is not nearly as accurate as MacBook's retina.

We reviewed the lowest models in the Zephrus S series, but even if we upgraded, we wouldn't get anything else in the display department-just a slightly disappointed 1080p screen.

What you will like is the refresh rate of 144hz, which makes it as smooth as switching or minimizing window animation. It's like watching YouTube videos at 60 FPS instead of the standard 30 FPS-even if you use it for a long time, you'll notice this quality.

Asustek promises to get a lot from the display, including 100%sRGB gamut coverage, but you don't have to be a display enthusiast to see that the monitor can't be fully transmitted. The monitor is very good for blue shading, and even untrained eyes can see excessive saturation. SRGB gamut coverage is less than the promised 100%, only 85.3%, almost the same as the previous Zephyrus.

We also expect the screen to have higher brightness. We are not nervous at any time, but even at the maximum brightness level, the screen is not very impressive-the maximum luminance score we recorded is only 267 cd/m2. By contrast, MacBook Pro has a score of 445cd/m2, so you can understand the dullness of the product.

Ephyrus S: specifications and performanc

This is part of the review, and such machines become flexible, because if there is one thing, the game computer is really good, and it does well in our benchmark tests.

It is worth mentioning that the model we tested is not the top specification model provided: the GPU in our evaluation unit is Nvidia GTX 1060, while the top specification model comes with the company's brand new RTX 2080. Elsewhere, our machine has an 8-generation, 6-core Intel Core i7-8750H and 16GB 266MHz DDR4 memory. However, despite the lack of RTX GPU, Zephyrus S attacked our benchmark, releasing the highest laptop score we have ever seen.

Another factor affecting the impressive machines in the benchmark is the new 6-core CPU. The extra core was really different in our tests compared to the predecessor of the previous model of Kaby Lake, and it did shine in multitasking tests.

Our tests involve image and video rendering and are intensive for all of the above components. Of the best laptops we've ever tested in performance, the overall score of 166s-a score of 15 that beat the 127th Thunder Snake Blade, but only a fraction of those that failed to beat Apple's 15-inch MacBook Pro and Dell XPS 15. In fact, it effectively manages to match the two machines in our professional workstation benchmark, which is by no means easy.

What surprises us most is how quiet it is when doing all these things-relatively speaking, at least. It's hard to find a game laptop that doesn't sound like a jet engine when performing demanding tasks, but it's pretty good. This is a loud person, a few desks will know if you are doing something intensive, but it is not as annoying as other people in the market. Due to the increase in cooling air intake, the fan can run more slowly and (later quieter), which is a pleasant project.

Asustek ROG Zephyrus S: battery life

As you would expect from such a powerful machine, running it requires a lot of results. Asustek obviously chose to fill it as much as possible to make it look like a paddle, and there was obviously not enough room for the size of the battery.

This may be why it scored so badly in our battery benchmark test-it died under medium load three hours and a minute later. However, if you buy its battery-life computer, then you will be furious to see what it really is as a brand-name game console. It is well known that game computers are power-consuming machines because graphics cards used to promote smooth games are very demanding on power, even when idling.

If it's the battery life you're looking for, it's best to use XPS 15, which allows you to be fully charged for more than seven hours, while MacBook Pro, despite its high price, can wear out for more than eight hours. Both of these will get you back more money, so it's a tradeoff if you want to.

Asustek ROG Zephyrus S: ports and functions

Although the Zephyrus S is housed in a very thin chassis, it can provide you with all the ports you need anytime, anywhere.

In terms of USB slots, you cover almost all the basics. Two USB 2.0 ports and one USB 3.1 provide full-size USB connectivity, while USB Type-C ports provide power and external display options as well as other supported devices and accessories. If USB-C is not suitable for you, you can also use its HDMI port.

Asustek ROG Zephyrus S: judgment

Admittedly, Zephyrus S is very powerful-this is its main selling point, and its price is cheaper than XPS 15 and MacBook Pro. For price, if you are willing to deal with some shortcomings, this is a reliable choice.

If you want or need something as super refreshing as the MacBook, and even though it's packed to the size of a laptop, the display is not ideal, it's not mobile. The battery life of Zephrus S, no matter how much power it produces, is very bad and quite unforgivable for a technology in 2019.

But if you don't plan to use your workstation away from your desk for a long time, there's no reason not to consider Zephyrus S. It may be affected by the battery and display departments, but make no mistake, it will hit you away from its performance.
