1. Frightened for three hours

The most direct impact of the outage is that the corporate website or APP that purchased the Ali Cloud service cannot be used properly.

If "cannot be used" is still an abstract term, then the affected enterprises can provide a more concrete understanding.

Confucius used Book Network issued a statement on the 3rd, saying that due to the large-scale failure of Ali Yun, the hole net is temporarily unavailable. The implication is that during this period of downtime, users will not be able to buy goods in Kongwang.

For example, the statement released on the same day, namely Hi score, an application platform for live broadcast of football matches, said that Aliyun's outage led to stutters in some modules, that is, a decline in the user experience.

In turn, the larger the failure area of Aliyun, the more enterprises and users will be affected.

About an hour after the outage, Aliyun officially responded that IO HANG occurred in instances such as ECS servers in part C of the availability zone of North China 2, which was gradually recovered after emergency troubleshooting.

According to Aliyun's website, Aliyun's service can be geographically divided into Asia-Pacific, Europe and America, Middle East and India, while Asia-Pacific includes 13 regions, including North China, East China, South China and Hong Kong.

Afterwards, Ali Yun said that he would be in awe of every line of code and every entrustment.

In October 2016, an accident of ECS server IO HANG also occurred in part B of Ariyun's East China availability Zone 1.

Further, in September 2015, Alibaba Cloud Dun's Anknight product upgrade triggered bug, which caused some normal files in the user's ECS to be mistakenly quarantined. The reason is that the programmer wrote the wrong line of code. Also in the same year, Aliyun launched the "100x time compensation Program"

With such a large volume, every downtime of Aliyun will have a great impact on customers.

Contrary to its negative impact on customers, Aliyun has become a global leader in cloud services by virtue of the Chinese market.

According to Alibaba's financial report on January 30, Aliyun's revenue is 21.36 billion yuan, an increase of about 20 times in four years, making it the largest cloud service company in Asia. Last year, the figure was 11.17 billion yuan.

3. How to compensate for the downtime?

After the outage, Aliyun said it would deal with compensation as soon as possible in accordance with the SLA agreement.

The "SLA agreement" is the service level agreement (Service Level Agreement, referred to as "SLA"). According to Aliyun's official website, for a single ECS instance, if the service availability is less than 99.95%, users can receive compensation of 10%, 25% and 100% monthly service fee.

In addition, the compensation standards of Huawei Cloud and Tencent Cloud are similar.

A cloud computing enterprise engineer told China News Service that the compensation for the failure of cloud services is mainly "delivery time". For example, Aliyun has carried out "compensation for a hundred times the time" before.

As for enterprises, they are most concerned about how to avoid failure.

Some analysts believe that although cloud service providers promise 99.99% security and reliability, anyone could be the hapless 0.01%. Therefore, there are usually two ways to avoid failures, one is to back up the data and update it regularly, and the other is not to put eggs in the same basket and use more than one cloud service provider.

But this will undoubtedly increase the cost of the enterprise. How cloud service providers are more reliable is still a problem to be solved.
