W3wp.exe is a process associated with an application pool in IIS (Internet Information Server). If you have multiple application pools, there will be multiple w3wp.exe process instances running. This process is used to allocate a large amount of system resources.

For the problem that the w3wp.exe process takes up too much memory, many online solutions are to check the service name of PID in the iis application pool program by running iisapp-an at the command prompt, and then do recycling.

But in Windows server2016, the iisapp.vbs file is no longer available, so the corresponding command cannot be run, so there is another way to do it.

Open the task manager, click to open the resource monitor, and find the PID corresponding to the program that takes up too much memory

Open a command prompt

Locate cd c:\ windows\ System32\ inetsrv

Enter appcmd list wp

Find the application corresponding to PID, and then recycle the corresponding program in iis Manager. This operation is recommended to be carried out during non-working hours, or the program can be timed so that it does not have to be handled manually.
