Yesterday I planned to install kali on my hard drive, so I downloaded a 1.06 version of kali linux with amd64 bit.

Then it was left like this, and after a period of time, the download was completed. I put it in the root directory of disk D, and there was only one kali-linux-1.0.6-amd64.iso file at that time. Why is there only one?

Because when the kali official website downloads the iso image, there will also be the SHA-1 checksum of the file.

(1) Let's look at what went wrong.

The error prompt is

Installation steps failed:

Failed to perform an installation step. You can try to rerun the failed project from the menu, skip it and select another project

The failed step is to install the system

(2) Analysis: the answer to this question in the official forum is divided into two parts. I identified the problem by testing both scenarios and virtual machine testing. And most of the problems tend to the second, the lack of file integrity.

[1] the first is that some old systems can recognize up to four primary partitions (including swap partitions) at a time. For the live kali installation we use, the U disk occupies a primary partition (there may be a swap on the U disk), and then generally speaking, there are more people with dual systems. There is also one for windows, one for the root partition, and another for allocation.

If it is the first, you are doing that step of zoning. Find your flash drive in the partition list, then select the flash drive and press Enter to enter.

Then the first item is "Do not use". If it is used, please change it to "Do not use". It will be fine after that. But this is not common.

[2] the second is the one mentioned above. Before installing, we have to check the iso file to see if there are any missing files, which is known through our SHA-1 check file. The above situation is because there is an exception in the transfer of data between the kali server and us, resulting in missing files, but it shows that the download has been completed. Generally speaking, the image file corresponds to the checksum.

Note: note, however, that in addition to the SHA-1 check, we also need to load the image into the virtual machine test.

(3) the screenshot of the above error is taken on the virtual machine, and there is no need to consider the hardware compatibility on the virtual machine. So if there is a problem during the installation of the virtual machine. Obviously we need to download a new image, it is recommended to use Torrent to download, this is more reliable.

(4) remember to check after downloading the new image, and then install it again. Enjoy your kali!

Postscript: the problem this time is to ignore the verification file, so that you go in the wrong direction. Details determine success or failure!
