This article introduces Windows 10 how to show / hide only a specific file format extension, the content is very detailed, interested friends can refer to, hope to be helpful to you.

In Windows File Explorer, the file extension is not displayed by default, but something like DLL is always displayed; if you want to see the extension, you can open the display option in the folder options, or Win10 users can open the extension display item directly in the Ribbon tab.

However, this kind of manipulation is relatively macro, basically on and off, is there any way to show or hide the extension only for files in a specific format? The answer is yes, and the specific methods are as follows:

1. Enter regedit in the Cortana search bar and press enter to enter the registry editor

2. Take the executable file .exe as an example, navigate to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ .exe

3. Double-click "(default)" on the right to copy the numerical data "exefile", as shown in the following figure--

Tip 1: the purpose of the above operation is to find out the true location of the configuration .exe file registry values.

4. From the data obtained in the previous step, the following positions are deduced:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ exefile

5. Create a new string value, named AlwaysShowExt, and leave the numeric data blank.

6. Restart the file explorer, which can be easily realized by using the shortcut command on the home page of the soft media Rubik's cube (click to download). Enter the file explorer and view the executable file without displaying the extension. You can see that the extension is still displayed, as shown in the following figure--

Tip 2: you can see that the dynamic link library file .dll file is still displayed. If you navigate to the corresponding location in the registry according to the above method, you will find that there is also an AlwaysShowExt value under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ dllfile, so this is why the system always displays .dll by default.

7. in the same way, you can use a text file .txt to try to hide the extension all the time. Use the above method to navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ txtfile, create a new string value NeverShowExt, and leave the numerical data blank.

Tip 3: generally speaking, the entry of the basic file extension in the registry is "file" (? For single-character wildcards, the form appears here to illustrate the project format), but the non-basic project names are varied, so just to be on the safe side, you should strictly follow the method of this article in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. Determine the project name of the format in, and then navigate to the appropriate location to modify it.

8. Restart the File Explorer using the Rubik's Cube. After entering, if the extension is displayed, you can see that the text file extension is not displayed, as shown in the following figure.

The above methods are suitable for almost all Windows systems, including XP, Win7, Win8/Win8.1, Win10 and so on. You can always show / hide any file format extension according to your personal needs.
