This article focuses on "what are the main points of Web design based on plain text reading on the mobile end", interested friends may wish to take a look. The method introduced in this paper is simple, fast and practical. Let's let the editor take you to learn "what are the main points of Web design based on plain text reading on mobile?"

1 determine the evaluation index of experience

1.1 Mobile Reading and its components

Mobile reading refers to all reading behaviors carried out by mobile terminals such as mobile phones, tablet computers and e-readers, including browsing the web through a browser and reading ways such as book city client, news client, information client, magazine client, Weibo, official account articles, etc., browsing novels, newspapers, books, magazines, animation, literature and other reading behavior.

In terms of the constituent elements of mobile reading, there are mainly three elements: mobile reading user (subject), e-reading material (object composed of content and mobile carrier), and behavior (user attitude and behavior expression), as shown in the following figure.

1.2 indicators that affect the performance of mobile reading

There are many studies on the impact of mobile reading performance indicators, the relevant indicators can be divided into four categories: subject evaluation, digital content, hardware performance, software functions (see table below).

1.3 Evaluation indicators of the reading experience of plain text articles

The purpose of this study is to provide a better article reading experience for official account users, combined with the current situation of the product, it has its uniqueness in the evaluation index. Among them, "digital content" is open and will be optimized through operational recommendations in the future, which is not within the scope of this study. "hardware performance" as a whole depends on the impact of the operation of users' own mobile terminals and mobile QQ versions, which is more complex, so at this stage, the research only focuses on display comfort and adapts to different screens through mainstream screen test results. At present, the "software function" is not perfect, and it will be designed differently with the value orientation of the article in the future, so at this stage, the research mainly focuses on the influence of layout design, that is, font, font size, line spacing and other factors on reading.

It is determined that the purpose of this study is to optimize the reading experience of pure text articles, and the corresponding secondary indicators ("*" in the table), combined with product characteristics, we refine the indicators. The display comfort of layout design can usually be evaluated from two angles: visual performance (usability) and visual subjective preference (aesthetics). According to previous studies, it is found that there is a significant correlation between them, and those with higher subjective preference scores tend to have better identification performance. This can also be verified by the relationship between the elements that affect visual performance and design elements.

The impact of different layout design on visual performance is relatively limited within a certain article length (when users maintain a high degree of concentration, the accuracy and time of task completion will not be very different). However, it can be shown through visual fatigue (which is also a manifestation of the user's high concentration). In the related research of visual fatigue, the main conclusions are as follows:

a. Brightness contrast between text and background

When the white background encounters black text, it improves the reflectivity of the text, so it is easy to be noticed and understood, but the chromatic aberration is large, long-term gaze will cause fatigue, and the fixation time is relatively short.

Users prefer positive polarity (dark text and light background), but negative polarity (light text and dark background) is less likely to fatigue.

b. The smallest acceptable perspective of the text

Usually determined by font size and reading distance, the laboratory measurement method is shown in the following figure. In the e-book reading test, for Chinese characters close to a square (that is, the word height is equal to the word width), it is generally acceptable that the minimum sight distance is above 30cm and the appropriate sight distance is 50cm. The word high in the youth group (20-35 years old) is at least 4.8mm (24pt), and that in the middle-aged group (36-50 years old) is at least 5.14mm (25pt). When the character height of the approximate square Chinese font is 4.85 mm and the line spacing is 3 mm, the character spacing is 0.61 mm or 1.21 mm will have better performance, and will not increase visual fatigue [2].

To sum up, in the case of determining the font, word color, background, font size, character spacing and line spacing are the main factors that affect visual performance. In addition, screen brightness, screen size, screen resolution, ambient light, reading distance, user age, text length, reading purpose and so on will have an impact on users' reading experience, which we will control in the study.

Visual subjective preference can be comprehensively evaluated by three indicators: clarity, aesthetics and visual comfort.

2 Research methods and prospects

2.1 Research paradigm

This study is mainly divided into two parts. the first part is subjective debugging, as shown in the following figure, users are asked to adjust the relevant parameters on the computer, and the visual effects corresponding to the parameters will be synchronously displayed on the mobile phone. Users need to adjust their most comfortable visual experience.

2.2 variable control

The independent variables are reading sight distance (horizontal 1: habitual sight distance, horizontal 2: appropriate sight distance-50cm) and mobile phone model (horizontal 1:iPhone6, horizontal 2:iPhone6plus). Each test balances the sequential effect through ABBA. Each test is given subjective feedback and a 5-minute rest before the next test.

The use of uniform ambient light, and iPhone adaptive screen brightness, the user age from 14 to 35 years old, the length of each article, typos distribution are relatively balanced, users are required to maintain a fixed line-of-sight distance in the revision test, find typos and write on paper as quickly as possible.

2.3 Summary and research prospect

In this study, under several fonts selected by designers, the visual performance of users' subjective preference reading experience is measured to determine the parameter values of design elements such as word color, background, font size, character spacing, line spacing and so on. Reviewing the research results of this paper, we can find that the sight distance of users in mobile phone reading is closer than that of e-books, the average sight distance is 30cm, and nearly half of the users' sight distance is between 10-30cm. Screen size, sight distance and age have different effects on font size, line spacing, background, word color and other parameters. In addition, fonts play a very important role (for example, Orchid Pavilion text 36-38pt, Hanyi text 34-36pt). Different fonts will get different result parameters under the influence of different line-of-sight and other factors. For more information, please see the follow-up visual students' sharing articles.

Fonts serve for text reading. Whether they are designers who choose fonts for reading design, or readers who look at fonts repeatedly because of text reading, they will gradually form their own evaluation criteria about fonts and text typesetting intentionally or unwittingly. Therefore, we usually think that there is a general visual cognitive psychology of the population, as well as the comprehensive evaluation ability of professional designers through long-term work experience, which may be different. for example, different individuals have different preferences for different fonts and different weights are assigned between aesthetics and usability.

When using fonts, designers need to choose the appropriate font according to the design requirements, set the corresponding font size, spacing, line spacing, color, etc., to meet the cost requirements, in order to obtain the best visual effect. This process will involve a balance between aesthetics and usability. This balance is particularly important when the font usage scene is complex and the users are very different.

Therefore, there are two directions for future research:

First, starting from the study of fonts, we can obtain the general visual cognitive psychology of users in different scenarios.

Second, starting from the performance of mobile reading, evaluate and optimize other aspects of the index system.
