Shulou(Shulou.com)06/01 Report--
DD-WRT is a powerful third-party router firmware, which can enhance the function of the wireless router by setting different wireless modes.
There are several modes of Broadcom chip: AP, Client, Clinet Bridge, Adhoc, Repeater, Repeater Bridge.
There are several modes of Atheros chip: AP, Client, Clinet Bridge, Adhoc, Station (WDS Station), AP (WDS AP)
It should be noted that in the absence of a unified international standard, different wireless routing vendors have slightly different interpretations of bridging, relay and WDS. The following is just an explanation of the wireless mode in DD-WRT.
1. AP (Access Point)
The router generally has a WAN port, which is used to connect Internet; and several LAN ports (4 at home). The machines connected to the LAN port are all in the same local area network. Wireless routers operating in AP mode extend wired LAN to wireless LAN. All computers that connect wirelessly to the router are also in the LAN.
Its application scenario is that the broadband at home can only be used by one computer by default, and if you want to share it with multiple computers, you have to set the wireless route to AP, so that computers connected to infinite routes can share broadband. This is also the configuration of most families. Therefore, wireless routers in AP mode convert wired signals into wireless signals.
2. Client
Client means customer, as the name implies, the wireless router acts as a client of the existing wireless signal. One of its application scenarios is to assume that there is only a wireless signal in a conference room of the company, and the desktop does not have a wireless network card, so it cannot access the network. At this time, a wireless router (called secondary router) can be set to Client mode and connected to the company's wireless network, and any machine connected to the router LAN port can access the network. So the wireless router in Client mode converts the wireless signal into wired signal.
It is important to note that this mode has the following limitations:
a. All machines connected to the network through this mode are in a separate subnet. For example, the company's wireless signal is on the network 192.168.1.while the computer accessed through a wireless router in Client mode must be another network, such as 10.0.0.*. Therefore, the router needs to turn on the DHCP service to automatically assign IP addresses to the connected machines.
b. The secondary router no longer provides AP service, and the machine can not access the network wirelessly through the secondary router, but can only access the network through its LAN port.
3. Client Bridge
The Client mode has two limitations, and the Client Bridge mode is the first to address its limitations. Setting the router to Client Bridge allows all machines connected to the network through the secondary router to be in the same subnet as the primary router, which assigns IP addresses to the newly accessed machines. Therefore, in Client Bridge mode, the DHCP service on the secondary router needs to be turned off. If you want the secondary router to have AP function, you only need to add a "virtual interface" at the wireless configuration. If the wireless network name (SSID) is the same as the wireless network name (SSID) of the primary router, it can achieve the effect of expanding the signal. This mode can be understood as relay.
4. Repeater
Repeater is similar to the Client mode. It can not only convert the wireless signal into wired signal, but also convert the wireless signal of the main router into a different ssid signal. This overcomes the second limitation of the Client mode, but all the machines connected to the network through the secondary router are also in the same subnet, which is the same as the Client mode, which is not available on the Atheros chip DD-WRT and can be implemented using the Client mode + virtual interface wireless network.
5. Repeater Bridge
From the point of view of the name, this mode should be the most powerful. It can convert the wireless signal of the primary router into wired and other ssid wireless signals, and it can also enable the access machine to be routed in the same subnet as the primary wireless. therefore, this also requires that the DHCP service on the secondary router be turned off. This mode does not exist on the Atheros chip DD-WRT, and can be realized by using Client Bridge mode + virtual interface wireless network.
6. AdHoc
From the point of view of the name, this mode is to establish a point-to-point temporary wireless connection, which is rarely used and is basically not used on routers, but some routers have such one-button buttons that are easy to use.
The following table summarizes the similarities and differences of the above patterns.

I use Repeater Bridge mode, primary and secondary wireless routes are set to the same ssid and the same authentication method (WPA2-Personal, password is also the same), so that you can seamlessly switch between the wireless signals of the primary router and the secondary router. Under normal circumstances, the terminal can only find one (the signal is the strongest), and there may be a very small number of terminals that will find multiple signals with the same name. Automatic handover is achieved during the movement (the handover mechanism depends on the wireless terminal) without manual operation.
7.WDS Station
WDS (Wireless Distribution System) wireless distributed system is a protocol that wirelessly connects two access points (AP). This is the WDS client, which is generally set up on the secondary router. In conjunction with the primary router, the primary router is set to "WDS AP" mode, the secondary route is set to "wds station" mode, and the same SSID and encryption algorithm are set. This mode has no AP function. Then fill in each other's wireless mac address separately. Note that it is the wireless mac address here, and be careful not to write the mac address as the wan port or lan port. In order to build a stable WDS, devices with the same chip should be used, that is, if WDS is established on different chips, interoperability is possible, but it is not guaranteed to work properly.
8.WDS AP
This is the WDS server, which is usually set on the main router. The primary router chooses WDS AP and the secondary router chooses WDS Station. This mode has the AP function, and then fill in each other's wireless mac address separately. Note that it is the wireless mac address here, and be careful not to write the mac address as the wan port or lan port.
The difference between WDS and Repeater is that Repeater does not need to set up the master router and does not need to know the MAC address of the network card of the master router. It only needs to know the wireless password of the master router to connect. How to use: select the relay mode in the wireless basic settings, enter the SSID where you need to relay the wireless route, select the encryption mode of the main router in wireless security, enter a virtual interface in the wireless basic settings, enter the wireless SSID you want to set, and set the password of the virtual interface wireless network in the wireless security.
