Microsoft's new version of Edge based on Chromium has always attracted the attention of developers and users, and the official release of the first version of Dev and Canary channel was released in 8 days local time.

Both Dev and Canary build are developer preview versions, both belong to Microsoft Edge Insider Channels, and there is also a Beta build. According to Microsoft, the Canary channel will be updated every day, while the Dev channel will be updated every week, and the Beta channel has not yet been released, it will be updated on 6 Monday. Each channel has its own icon and name, and developers can install multiple channel versions at the same time for testing. Officials will push the Canary build to the Dev channel based on user feedback, automated test results, performance metrics and telemetry data, and then to the Beta channel until the Stable version is finally released.

Only Windows 10 is currently supported, but other platforms such as Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and macOS will be added later.

Microsoft has always stressed that its plan is to carry out Edge work on the basis of Chroimum, rather than making branches in the community. When it announced the transformation of Edge, it promised to become an important contributor to Chroimum. After this small half-year of research and development, Microsoft seems to have made some good achievements.

Since joining the community in December, Microsoft has submitted 275 commit to the Chroimum project, with its own contributions in some of the more focused areas. For example, accessibility, Microsoft Edge is currently the only browser that has a full score in the HTML5Accessibility browser benchmark, and Microsoft has brought these contributions to the Chromium project to improve the Web experience for all users. These improvements include modern assistive API support (accessible reading tools such as Windows narrator, magnifying glass, Braille display, etc.), high contrast and improved readability of video subtitles on Windows 10.

In addition, Edge is also known for its smooth scrolling experience and its fast and convenient Windows Hello authenticator, and Microsoft is working closely with Chromium engineers to make touchscreen, touchpad, mouse wheel, keyboard and sidebar scrolling as smoothly as possible, making password-free and dual-cause authentication solutions more personalized and secure.

It is also worth mentioning that Microsoft has been working with Google engineers to enable Chromium to run natively on ARM devices with Chromium 73 and above. We have just reported that developers have built and run native Chroimum on Windows ARM64 devices, and Microsoft says their cooperation will soon enable Chromium-based browsers to provide native implementation for Windows 10 PC on the ARM platform, significantly improving performance and battery life.
