On May 21st, 2019, Rancher Labs (hereinafter referred to as Rancher), a leading provider of container management software, announced the launch of Rio, a MicroPaaS platform that can be used on any standard Kubernetes cluster. Rio consists of some Kubernetes custom resources and an optional CLI. Users can easily deploy the service to Kubernetes and automatically obtain continuous delivery, DNS, HTTPS, routing, monitoring, automatic capacity expansion, canary deployment, git trigger build and other features.

"the constant philosophy of all Rancher products is to make Kubernetes easy to use. But our team feels deeply that the existing products or solutions in the industry today do not solve the problem of the large amount of work required to manage tools such as Istio and Knative." Darren Shepherd, chief architect and co-founder of Rancher, said: "it is with this consideration that we have built Rio so that developers can deploy, manage, extend, and compile applications with a single command."

Rio is the third new Kubernetes lightweight project launched by Rancher in 2019. Earlier this year, Rancher launched K3s, the lightest Kubernetes release in history, and k3OS, the industry's first Kubernetes operating system, which received high attention and praise from the industry. These projects focus on lightweight, simple, and flexible Kubernetes projects, providing a wider range of usage scenarios for Kubernetes and truly Kubernetes Everywhere.

Rio: MicroPaaS platform based on Kubernetes

The traditional PaaS platform "promises" a series of ideal functions to users, but from the past performance, PaaS platform has been difficult to provide users with a real high-quality user experience. PaaS platforms are usually heavyweight and difficult to run, and large dedicated projects are needed to deploy them in the enterprise, as well as specialized teams to manage them. PaaS users often find that the platform has too many specifications and limitations that may apply to specific workflows, but this is not necessarily the workflow that developers are familiar with.

Rio comes from a series of Rancher projects (K3s, k3OS) that focus on lightweight, simple, and flexible Kubernetes-based projects. All the functions of Rio are specially designed, and users can use the default settings to run and use Rio quickly. Of course, they can also be flexibly configured, replaced or disabled according to their actual needs. If you want to use only one feature in Rio, you can use only this feature and ignore the rest. All of this is allowed to happen, and Rio is a platform that is closely integrated with the Kubernetes ecosystem and draws a lot of resources from it.

Rio consists of some Kubernetes custom resources, an optional CLI, and a controller running in a cluster. Running Rio in a cluster is no different from the method and experience of running other applications in a cluster.

Three major user values, the real fun of discovering containers in minimalism

What if you could combine the power of Istio, Knative, and Kubernetes and use them as easily as you use Docker? Rio exists to realize this vision. With Rio, you can deploy, manage, extend, and write stateless applications in any Kubernetes cluster with just a few keystrokes.

The three major user values of Rio include:

Quickly deploy and manage applications: you can deploy and manage applications quickly and confidently.

Lightweight: Rio can be installed in any Kubernetes cluster

Powerful: you can use Prometheus, Knative and Istio quickly and easily

Automatic scaling: automatic scaling based on Prometheus layer 4 and layer 7 metrics.

Ensure a high degree of security for applications: all applications can be launched with the most secure network configuration.

Encryption: your workload will receive a DNS record and a wildcard certificate from LetsEncrypt

Integration: Rio integrates with Kubernetes RABC for maximum security

> include safety net: your application automatically includes resource restrictions to get the best cluster performance.

Provide users with the best new version experience: promote the new version in stages and continue to provide users with an excellent experience.

Simplify your Pipeline:Rio to monitor the remote image repository, and you can tell it to build and deploy the new version automatically when you submit automatic changes

> Eternal smooth experience: when launching a new version of the application, Rio understands the current load and scales for maximum performance.

Built-in cloud native technology to create the best state for container use

Rio creates an experience of Istio and Knative and provides an unimaginably easy way to manage all aspects of the application.

The main features of Rio include:

Automatic DNS and HTTPS

HTTP load balancing

HTTP routing

HTTP index

Automatic expansion and reduction

Canary deployment

Deployment triggered by Git

Everything is open source, welcome to use
