The company said Thursday that it shipped more than 6.7 million Galaxy 5G smartphones in 2019. Samsung's first 5G phone went on sale in May and had shipped 2 million units as of early September. At the time, the company said it expected to ship about 4 million units by the end of 2019.

5G is touted as a game-changing technology that can significantly improve the speed and coverage of wireless networks. It runs 10 to 100 times faster than today's typical 4G cellular connection. The time delay between the ping mobile phone network and the response is faster than that provided by Wi-Fi.

Samsung is one of the few companies to launch multiple 5G phones. As of the end of 2019, there were only a small number of models in the world, including the Galaxy S105G, Galaxy Note 10 Plus 5G (and the smaller Note 10 of 10G in some markets such as South Korea), the Galaxy A905G and the Galaxy Fold 5G. Only S105G and Note 10 Plus 5G are listed in the United States.

Samsung accounted for 54% of the global 5G smartphone market as of November, the company said on Thursday.

While 6.7 million sounds like a big number, it accounts for only a small portion of Samsung's total smartphone shipments. Samsung shipped 78.2 million smartphones in the third quarter alone, according to Strategy Analytics. According to the company, it is the world's largest phone maker, with a share of 21%.

As the technology becomes more mainstream around the world, Samsung is likely to launch more 5G phones in 2020. The company said it would launch "new developments to further improve the speed, performance and security of Galaxy 5G devices".
