Over the past few years the performance of Arm-based servers has improved significantly. And today's progress is no exception. Today, STH (for Family Services) has an image of Ampere's engineering sample of the Altra Max M128-30 processor with 128 Arm-based cores.

Ampere Computing is a startup founded in 2017 that focuses on creating a more modern approach to server infrastructure. Using Arm-based processors, the company wants to work with very large-scale processors to enable them to run all the densest workloads on their custom processors.

The company has announced its Ampere Altra Max processor, which should be able to enable up to 128 cores on a single chip and have some impressive specifications. Each of these 128 cores is based on the Arm v8.2 specification and can run at a maximum clock speed of 3 GHz. Each kernel has L1 I-cache (instruction cache) for 64KB, L1 D-cache (data cache) for 64KB, and L2 cache for 1MB. The system-level cache is 16MB, and each kernel has dual 128bit SIMD processing capacity.

Because the system runs with a large number of kernels, there must be a suitable memory system to handle these kernels. As a result, the Ampere uses an 8-channel, 72-bit DDR4-3200 memory controller that can host up to 16 DIMM, converted to RAM for each slot 4TB. For connectivity, it has 128 PCIe Gen4 protocol channels and 4 x16 CCIX channels, which means cache consistency is also taken into account here.

The appearance of this picture lets us know that the CPU may be shipped and that the customer may have got the Ampere Altra MAX M128-30 128 core processor. This may mark the beginning of an era when large cloud manufacturers begin to buy Arm-based processors to supplement or replace x86 products that dominate the market today. If Ampere plays well, the company can get attention from some of the large cloud service providers and may gain more customers in the Arm-based trend.
