Steam conducts a monthly survey to collect data on the types of computer hardware and software that customers are using. The survey is not required and conducted anonymously. The information collected will be very helpful in deciding which technologies to invest in and which products to offer.

As the new month begins, Valve released last month's software / hardware survey data. In May 2019, Steam Linux usage increased slightly as a percentage.

Last month, the proportion of Steam users running Linux (according to the controversial Steam survey) rose to 0.84%, up 0.02% from April. This figure is largely in line with recent expectations of about 0.8 per cent in the region and is up from last year.

Since Valve launched Steam Play last year, the market share of Linux games has been growing point by point. Because Wine-based Proton and DXVK convert Direct3D to Vulkan, Steam Play allows many famous Windows games to run on Linux. But there are no Linux exclusive products, the return of Steam machines or any milestone that has led Windows gamers to suddenly turn to Linux. As a result, it grows slowly or slightly every month.

In May, 95.9% of people used Windows on Steam, compared with 3.26% of macOS.
