According to SlashGear, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has just released Apple's patent application filed in February. The patent, called facial expression-based speech effects, involves a technology that allows iPhone users to bark while using the Animoji function and make real dog barks from loudspeakers. This is just one of three different options shown in the application diagram.

According to the figure, one feature of the technology will capture video and any audio of the user's face and play the result as an avatar. In essence, that's what Amuji is going to do now. In the second part of the picture, the user's facial actions are captured in the video together with the audio. In this case, a virtual avatar is displayed on the screen, mimicking facial movements, and the loudspeaker emits synchronized audio with special effects associated with the avatar.

The third part of the picture shows the user's facial action again, but this time he says something in the list of preset options. In this example, the user barks like a dog. On the display screen, it shows the avatar of the user, while the loudspeaker plays the dog's real barking. The patent application also covers the possibility that the technology can convert some of the facial expressions made by users into words.

We can never be sure whether the patent application or even the newly granted patent will eventually be used for future products. However, we can see that Apple is seriously considering the future of the Animoji (after all, it costs money to apply for a patent).
