Shulou(Shulou.com)06/03 Report--
Starting an ESXi installation from a flash device, which is part of the vSAN cluster, sets certain restrictions.
When booting a vSAN host from a USB/SD device, you must use at least 4 GB of high-quality USB or SD flash drives.
When booting a vSAN host from a SATADOM device, you must use a single-layer unit (SLC) device. The size of the boot device must be at least 16GB.
During installation, the ESXi installer creates a core dump partition on the boot device. The default size of the core dump partition meets most installation requirements.
1. If the memory of the ESXi host is equal to or less than 512 GB, you can boot the host from a USB, SD, or SATADOM device.
two。 If the memory of the ESXi host is greater than 512 GB, consider the following guidelines.
3. You can boot the host from a SATADOM or a disk device with at least 16 GB of memory. When using SATADOM devices, use single-layer cell (SLC) devices.
4. If you are using vSAN6.5 or later, you must resize the core dump partition on the ESXi host to boot from the USB/SD device.
The host booted from disk has a local VMFS. If the VMFS of the disk is running a virtual machine, the disk used for ESXi boot must be separated from the disk that is not used for vSAN. In this case, a separate controller is required.
Log information and boot devices in vSAN
When booting ESXi from a USB or SD device, log information and stack traces are lost after the host reboots. They are lost because the staging partition is on the RAM drive. Use persistent storage for logging, stack traces, and memory dumps.
Do not store log information on the vSAN data store. This configuration is not supported because failures in the vSAN cluster may affect the accessibility of log information.
For persistent log storage, consider the following options:
1. Use storage devices that are not used for vSAN and are formatted using VMFS or NFS.
two。 Configure ESXi Dump Collector and vSphere Syslog Collector on the host to send memory dumps and system logs to vCenter Server.
