Qualcomm introduced the new Snapdragon 865 mobile platform at the annual Snapdragon Summit, and now we finally have a better understanding of the performance of the platform. I was able to test the platform in Qualcomm reference equipment, including a series of benchmark tests, which was obviously the upgrade of Snapdragon 855 last year.

Please pay attention to some important things before you know the actual score. The Snapdragon 865 actually has a performance mode, so when enabled, it can provide more primitive performance. However, smartphone makers must enable this mode, which is unlikely to be enabled. Why not? When performance mode is enabled, battery life is affected. Considering that the actual performance improvement will not be so strong, it seems to save batteries, although some niche phones may choose to provide this mode.

It is also important to pay attention to the specifications of the reference equipment. In addition to Snapdragon 865, the device is also equipped with 12GB RAM, 128GB storage space and a 28801440 resolution display. This is almost the power level of our flagship mobile phone in 2020.

On AnTuTu, the reference device using Snapdragon 865 scored 556, 281 without performance mode, and 564, 970 with performance mode enabled, slightly higher. This is much better than the Google Pixel 4 and Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus powered by Snapdragon 855, which reached 412619 and 358160, respectively. It even surpassed the Apple A13 bionic chip of iPhone 11 Pro to 455778.

GeekBench 5 shows more similarities, but this time it can't surpass iPhone 11 Pro. When performance mode is disabled, the reference device has a single core score of 925 and a multi-core score of 3455. The single-core performance of this device is not good compared to the 1323 of iPhone 11 Pro, but it is not far from the multi-core performance of iPhone 3503. Samsung's Galaxy Note 10 Plus has an average score of 700 per core and 2534 multi-core, so Android devices with Snapdragon 865 will clearly have an advantage over Android devices with SD 855.

Artificial intelligence has been a major concern for Qualcomm over the past few years, and AnTuTu is not necessarily the most accurate measure of AI performance (just as the performance benchmark does not represent the real world of the phone). In terms of function, the device still scored high in this benchmark test. When performance mode is disabled, the clock rate is 468 min 516, more than twice the 196427 of Note 10 Plus. Qualcomm's emphasis on artificial intelligence performance seems to be making a lot of effort, at least according to these benchmarks.

Overall, it is clear that Snapdragon 865 performs much better than Snapdragon 855. Although some phones with 865 drivers may not perform as well as reference devices, especially those with less RAM, they should still be much better than those with 855 drivers. Over the years, Apple has upgraded Qualcomm's chipset in terms of original performance by introducing the latest iPhone model and the latest A-Series chips made for it. Apple seems to be on track to do this again, although AI features and 5G performance may be battles Qualcomm can win this year.
