Ericsson released the November edition of the Ericsson Mobility report, which discusses LTE data consumption forecasts and the global 5G future. Ericsson predicts that due to the sustained growth and rapid development of the 5G ecosystem, the number of global 5G users will reach 2.6 billion in the next five years.

The report shows that the average monthly traffic per smartphone is expected to rise from the current 7.2 GB to 24 GB by the end of 2025, driven in part by new consumer behaviors such as virtual reality (VR) streaming. The report also predicts that 5G will cover 65% of the world's population and handle up to 45% of global mobile data traffic by the end of 2025.

Leading communications service providers in Asia, Australia, Europe, the Middle East and North America have launched 5G networks. The report shows that South Korea began operating 5G in April 2019, and by the end of September 2019, 5G users had exceeded 3 million. Ericsson Mobile reported that mobile broadband technology will account for 57% of mobile users by the end of this year. In addition, the proportion of smartphone users is expected to increase from 48% to 54%. With regard to the country's 5G subscriptions, Ericsson expects the new technology to be launched in 2022 and will account for 11 per cent of mobile subscriptions by the end of 2025.

Monthly mobile data usage per smartphone has increased significantly in recent years, making it the highest in the world, according to the report.

Nitin Bansal, head of regional network solutions for Southeast Asia, Oceania and the market, said: "Mobile broadband services, the low price of low-cost smartphones and people's changing video viewing habits continue to drive monthly usage growth in the region."

With the rapid growth in the number of smartphone users and the increase in average usage per smartphone, the number of smartphone users is expected to increase by about 500 million, and total traffic is expected to triple by 2025, according to the report.
