How to transfer the application to Kubernetes, many novices are not very clear about this, in order to help you solve this problem, the following editor will explain for you in detail, people with this need can come to learn, I hope you can gain something.

Ben Sears

Kubernetes is the most popular management and orchestration tool nowadays. It provides a configuration-driven framework that allows us to define and manipulate the entire network, disk, and applications in a scalable and easy-to-manage manner.

If we have not completed the application containerization, it will be a high-intensity work to transfer the application to Kubernetes, and the purpose is to introduce the method of integrating the application with Kubernetes.

Step 1  -  containerizes the application

The container is a basic operating unit that can run independently. Unlike the traditional virtual machine, which relies on the simulation operating system, the container uses a variety of kernel features to provide an environment isolated from the host.

For experienced technicians, the whole containerization process is not complicated-- using docker, define a dockerfile that includes installation steps and configuration (download packages, dependencies, and so on), and finally build an image that developers can use.

Step 2  -  uses a multi-instance architecture

Before we migrate the application to Kubernetes, we need to confirm how it is delivered to the end user.

The multi-tenant structure of traditional web applications is that all users share a single database instance and application instance. This form works well in Kubernetes, but we suggest that we consider transforming the application into a multi-instance architecture to make full use of the advantages of Kubernetes and containerized applications.

The benefits of adopting a multi-instance architecture include:

Stability-single point of failure, does not affect other instances

Scalable-scaling is a matter of increasing computing resources through a multi-instance architecture, while for a multi-tenant architecture, deployment that requires the creation of a cluster application architecture can be cumbersome

Security-when you use a single database, all the data is together, and once a security breach occurs, all users will be threatened, while with multiple data centers, only one user's data will be at risk

Step 3-determine the resource consumption of the application

To be cost-effective, we need to determine the amount of CPU, memory, and storage required to run a single application instance.

By setting limits, we can precisely adjust how much space a Kubernetes node needs, make sure that the node is overloaded or unavailable, and so on.

This requires us to try and verify over and over again, and there are also some tools that can achieve this goal for us.

After determining the resource allocation, we can calculate the optimal resource size of the Kubernetes node

Multiplying the memory or CPU required by each instance by 100 (the maximum number of Pod a node can hold), we can roughly estimate how much memory and CPU your node should have.

Stress test the application to ensure that it runs smoothly when the node is full.

Step 4-Integration with Kubernetes

When the Kubernetes cluster is running, we will find that many DevOps practices come naturally--

Automatically scale Kubernetes nod

When the nodes are full, you usually need to configure more nodes so that all the power runs smoothly, so the auto-scaled Kubernetes nodes come in handy.

Automatically scale the application

Depending on the usage, some applications need to be scaled proportionally. Kubernetes uses triggers that can be automatically scaled and deployed, and commands:

Kubectl autoscale deployment myapp-- cpu-percent = 50-- min = 1-- max = 10

As above, when the percentage of CPU exceeds 50, expand the setup myapp deployment to 10 containers.

Automatically configure the instance when the user operates

For a multi-instance architecture, the end user deploys the application in Kubernetes, and to achieve this, we should consider integrating the application with Kubernetes API, or using a third-party solution to provide access to the request instance.

Define a custom hostname through user actions

Recently, more and more end users are attaching their domain names to their applications, and Kubernetes provides tools to make the process easier, even to the point of self-service (users press a button to set the domain point). We can do this using systems such as Nginx Ingress.
