The recently announced winner of the 2019 Marilyn Stafford Toll Portage Award is Anna Philippova, whose photography "Research at the end of the World" is located at the Arctic Research Station in Svalbard.

The Marilyn Marilyn Stafford FotoReportage Award is the first award hosted by Nikon this year to reward professional photographers for "solving important social, environmental, economic or cultural issues, whether local or global, with the theme of engaging and cohesive documentary photography."

Marilyn Stafford began her photography career in New York in 1948 when her friend made a film about him and asked her to shoot Albert Einstein. From there, she traveled around the world from Paris in the 1950s. Her friends, Magnum's founders Robert Capa and Henry Cartier Bresson, helped shape her work, including commissioned Parisian fashion houses and a picture of street children living in urban slums.

In 2019, the award went to photographer Anna Filipova, who worked for the New York Times and Reuters. She has published articles in CNN, BBC, Washington Post, Guardian and other magazines.

To win her award-winning project, Anna went to Ny-lesund, 79 degrees north latitude in Svalbard. This makes it the northernmost permanent civilian settlement in the world.

Ny-lesund also has the largest modern Arctic research laboratory, with a population made up mainly of research scientists. Its visits are severely restricted, but many important figures, including John McCain, Hillary Clinton and Ban Ki-moon, have visited it over the years.

Anna Philippova's photos show the severe conditions for the life and work of research scientists. It's fascinating to see the daily life of these remote research stations-we can only imagine how Anna will expand her project with a prize of 2000 pounds.

If you are interested in participating in the 2020 competition, you can find more information on Marilyn Stafford's website. In 2017, Marilyn and FotoDocument jointly established the Marilyn Stafford female photographer Award. This award is awarded only to documentary photographers who are committed to making the world a better place.

Women at all stages of their careers are welcome to apply, but they must have started looking for photos and articles of funding and must be able to show what they are doing. The 2020 awards are now open for registration.
