For system integration engineers, it may be necessary to install systems such as Windows operating system, VMware ESXi, and so on.

For me, I often install Windows operating system and VMware ESXi. Because the needs of users are different, the installed system and version are also different. I used to bring several USB drives, but now I still bring several USB drives (this is the superiority of Chinese language, this USB disk is not the other USB disk). But the flash drive I brought now is different from the one I used to bring.

The previous flash drive, different flash drive, may only be able to install different operating systems. For example, some USB drives are used to install Windows 7, some USB drives are used to install Windows Server 2008, and some can only install VMware ESXi The current flash drive, such as a 32GB USB drive, integrates different Windows versions from 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2016, VMware ESXi 5.0,5.1,5.5,5.5,6.0,6.5 and different OEM versions of ESXi, such as DELL and HP. Now with multiple flash drives, more is to install multiple ESXi servers to do multiple backups. The following describes the software, methods and steps used in the U disk of this tool I made.

First, use the flash drive of the computer store to make tools.

At present, there are many software to make startup U disk, and I am used to using the "computer store U disk startup disk production tool" production tool U disk. The official website is http://u.diannaodian.com/, and the latest version is 7.01, as shown in figure 1-1.

When installing Naodian U disk boot disk production tools, it may be "mistakenly killed" by antivirus software such as NOD32, which can be restored from the quarantine area and the installation path will be excluded.

But I am used to using the version before 6.5, and this article takes version 6.5 as an example.

(1) run the installer, click the folder icon on the right in install to, and select the installation location. As shown in figure 1-2.

(2) if the computer is installed with NOD32 antivirus software, there will be a "installation failure" prompt when the progress reaches 100%, as shown in figure 1-3.

(3) NOD32 is installed on the current computer, open NOD32, and click the "isolate" link in tools, as shown in figure 1-4.

(4) restore the mistakenly deleted DianNaoDian.exe program in "isolation", as shown in figure 1-5.

(5) in the "Advanced Settings → computer → virus and spyware protection → file system real-time protection → by path exclusion", add the installation path of the computer store U disk boot disk making tool to the list, as shown in figure 1-6.

(6) Open Explorer, locate the installation location in figure 1-2, and double-click DianNaoDian.exe, as shown in figure 1-7.

The computer store U disk boot disk making tool has two main functions: one is to make the U disk into the boot disk; the other is to make the ISO file and make the ISO file of the computer store U disk. Let's first introduce the first function.

(1) insert a U disk (the U disk is a new U disk or the data on the U disk has been backed up to a safe location and confirm that the backup has been completed), and click the "start making USB disk Startup" button, as shown in figure 1-8.

(2) the default mode is to make a startup U disk. In the "Please Select U disk" drop-down list, select the U disk, and be careful not to make an error. This can be selected according to the name and capacity of the U disk in the list. "allocate Hidden Space" Select the default value. In the "Please Select Mode" drop-down list, you can choose four modes to start the U disk: HDD-FAT32, ZIP-FAT32, HDD-FAT16, ZIP-FAT16, and choose the default HDD-FAT32; click to select NTFS (as shown in figure 1-9), and the "Information prompt" dialog box in figure 1-10 will pop up and click the "No" button.

(3) Click the "start production" button to pop up "Information Tip" to warn that this operation will delete all data on the U disk and cannot be recovered, as shown in figure 1-12. If the USB disk data has been backed up, click the OK button.

(5) when the production is complete, click the "No" button, as shown in figure 1-14.

The second function of the computer store U disk boot disk making tool is to generate an ISO image. The current version of the computer store startup U disk tool can be made into an ISO image, or you can choose an ISO file to make a boot U disk. Click "ISO mode", in "ISO generation, save path", select the save path and file name generated by ISO, click the "start generate" button, and create a computer store tool ISO file, as shown in figure 1-15.

The generated ISO file of the computer store can be used in a virtual machine or recorded as a CD (basically or rarely used now). Figure 1-16 shows different versions of the generated ISO files saved in the computer store.

Second copy of VMware ESXi installation ISO package to tool USB disk

The newly made tool flash drive has only two directories: "GHO" and "my tools", as shown in figure 1-17.

Create a DND directory in the root directory of the USB disk, copy the VMware ESXi ISO file to this directory, and you can copy the commonly used or used VMware ESXi ISO file or other tool ISO to this directory, as shown in figure 1-18.

However, these file names are "too long" and may not be easy to distinguish when they are displayed on a USB drive. So rename it to something like figure 1-18.

Three copies of the Windows installer to the tool USB disk

The USB disk made by the flash drive production tool of the computer store provides the function of "installing the original Windows", which is suitable for Windows 7 and later Windows operating systems. This feature is very useful in some situations:

(1) when installing Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10:00 of some brands of Lenovo, DELL, and HP, if you boot to Windows PE using a flash drive, use the "Windows installer" installation tool, and load ISO images such as Windows 7, and then install the Windows operating system, you may fail. Only by burning ISO to CD, booting from CD and installing CD can it be successful.

(2) when the server installs the Windows Server 2008 R2 and subsequent operating systems, the installation of the Windows Server operating system cannot be completed until the CD is booted and the RAID or SCSI drivers are loaded.

The U disk made by the computer store U disk startup disk production tool uses the "install original Windows" function to achieve the same effect as using CD-ROM installation.

For example, if you want to install the operating system of Windows Server 2008 R2 on the server, you can extract and expand the CD image of Windows Server 2008 R2 to the root directory of U disk without burning the CD, and rename the bootmgr file in the copied root directory to win7mgr.

However, under normal circumstances, this method can only expand the image of one operating system, either Windows 7, or Windows 10, or Windows Server 2008 R2. Take the production of Windows 7 installation USB disk as an example.

(1) use the virtual optical drive to load the ISO of Windows 7, select all files after loading successfully, and right-click to select "copy", as shown in figure 1-19.

(2) paste it into the root directory of the U disk, as shown in figure 1-20.

(3) rename the bootmgr under the U disk root directory to win7mgr, or make a copy of the bootmgr and then rename it to win7mgr, as shown in figure 1-21.

[description] whether installing Windows 7 or Windows 10, Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2016 Bootmgr should be renamed to win7mgr, because the computer store USB disk startup tool will look for this file and load the boot system through this file.

After the above steps, the USB disk can install the Windows operating system in a manner similar to "CD" boot.

But what if you want to install both Windows 7 and Windows 10, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2016? Prepare more flash drives. That's what I used to do. This is also the reason why I said earlier that there are multiple USB drives, each of which can be installed with a different operating system.

Until one day, I felt that this was a little too troublesome, so I wanted to make a "all-in-one" flash drive. I have integrated the following CDs:

I have also integrated Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows 2016 and other operating systems with different bits (32-bit and 64-bit) and different versions (such as professional, enterprise and flagship versions of Windows 7). Among them, the installation image of Windows 7 integrates the driver of USB 3.1 (which avoids the problem that the keyboard and mouse cannot be used after installing Windows 7 on the new motherboard). After the integration of 17.8GB, Baidu network disk cannot be shared, as shown in figure 1-23.

Four-copy drivers and common tool softwar

For the tool USB disk that installs the Windows operating system, you also need to integrate the driver, which can download the universal driver of "IT Sky", as shown in figure 1-24.

You can also download the "driver wizard" that integrates the universal network card driver.

You can also copy common tools and software in U disk, such as some compressed and decompressed WinRAR, input method, virtual optical drive, test software, etc., as shown in figure 1-25.

Use tool USB disk to install Windows operating system

After making the tool USB disk, it can be used to install the operating system.

(1) insert the USB disk into the computer, restart the computer, enter the BIOS settings, and set the latest startup of the U disk, or press the startup menu after the BIOS self-test to select the hotkey and select the U disk to start in the startup menu.

(2) the 6.5 startup interface of the computer store is shown in figure 1-26. By default, the cursor will stay at the last item "try to boot from the local hard disk" and count down to 30 seconds. If the computer is slow to react, especially on some brand servers, when this interface may appear, the 30-second countdown will also take effect, and the USB drive boot tool will try to boot from the hard drive. To avoid this, press the up and down cursor keys (↑↓) when the screen is black to prevent boot from the hard disk. Select item 11 "install the original Win7/8/10 system".

(3) Select "install Win7 system directly", as shown in figure 1-27.

(4) Click the next button in the Windows installer, as shown in figure 1-28.

(5) because I am using the bootstrap program of Windows 10, there will be a "activate Windows" dialog box, click "I do not have a product key", as shown in figure 1-29.

(6) in the "Select operating system to install" list, select the operating system to install, as shown in figure 1-30 and figure 1-31.

(7) in the following steps, it is the same as booting and installing from CD, these are not introduced one by one.

Use tool flash drive to install VMware ESXi

The steps to install VMware ESXi using a tool flash drive are as follows.

(1) insert the USB disk into the computer, restart the computer, enter the BIOS settings, and set the latest startup of the U disk, or press the startup menu after the BIOS self-test to select the hotkey and select the U disk to start in the startup menu.

(2) Select item 10, "start Custom ISO/IMG File", as shown in figure 1-32.

(3) Select "automatically search and list all files in the DND directory" and press enter, as shown in figure 1-33.

(4) list all files in the current DND directory, as shown in figure 1-34. Select the image of the ESXi you want to install here and press enter to boot the ISO file.

(5) for example, if you select item 15 in figure 1-34, load and boot the file, as shown in figure 1-35.

(6) after that, you can install ESXi according to the wizard, which is not covered in this article.

Seeing this, some readers may ask, since you can load VMware ESXi's ISO file, can you load Windows's ISO directly? For example, loading ISO of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 is not possible after actual testing. To install Windows in a way similar to CD boot, you also need to refer to the previous section. Load the ISO file in the DND directory, and after actual testing, you can load the ISO of all the VMware ESXi so far. Some ISO of Linux, ISO files of Panabit, and some IMG or other ISO files with relatively small images.

Figure 1-36 is a screenshot of the 6.2 version of the computer store USB disk boot disk making tool that loads and lists the files in the DND directory. In comparison, the boot flash drive made in version 6.2 or 6.3 may have a better effect.

Upgrade and restore of Seven USB disk Startup tool

The computer store U disk boot disk production tool has also been upgraded. If you want to remake the boot disk with a new version, you need to first "restore the U disk", and then click the "New make" button to re-make the current U disk into a boot U disk, as shown in figure 1-37.

Because every time you make a boot U disk, a hidden partition is created in front of the U disk. The size of the hidden partition created by different versions is different, but the overall size is getting larger and larger. As shown in figure 1-38, this is a hidden partition with the size of 558MB created in version 6.2.

The version 7.01 hidden partition is 708MB, which also occupies a partition of 448MB, as shown in figure 1-39.

If you want to restore the USB drive to its original state and release the hidden partition, you can select restore USB disk in figure 1-37, or use the DiskGenius tool to delete all hidden partitions in the USB drive and repartition.

[note] whether upgrading the U disk, restoring the U disk, or using DiskGenius to delete the hidden partition and re-partition, the original data in the U disk will be lost. Please back up the important data in the U disk before doing this.
