Russian high-tech group Rostec has launched a USB flash drive with built-in detonators that can destroy internal NAND memory chips. The manufacturer says the detonator can be activated manually and the resulting damage is completely safe for the user.

Rostec's Technodynamika has developed a USB drive that looks like a standard flash drive, but unlike ordinary drives, it contains not only a NAND memory chip and a USB-to-NAND bridge / controller, but also a battery and an electric detonator. Rostec said that when the button at the end of the device was pressed to start, the detonator would "burn out the printed circuit board with accumulated charge".

"this message will self-destruct in five seconds," is probably the most familiar phrase in the Mission impossible series. This sentence is usually accompanied by a cinematic sequence of self-destruction, including burning, dissolving in acid, or something else. But for Rostec drives, the shell of the device is still intact, which ensures the safety of the owner. Meanwhile, it remains to be seen how Technodynamika intends to protect the destroy button from accidental activation.

Modern drives that can quickly erase their contents usually use AES-256 keys to encrypt stored data, and they only destroy that key when they need to deactivate the data. Unless you have a powerful quantum computer, it is impossible to crack the 256-bit key in any reasonable time. However, for true paranoia who don't want to take risks, Rostec's approach is undoubtedly the preferred approach.
