In theory, Microsoft Edge's transition from EdgeHTML to Chrome will transform the default Windows 10 browser (now used across platforms) into a stronger competitor to Google Chrome and Firefox.

But in fact, Google Chrome is currently the world's leading desktop browser and the only browser to gain market share last month.

According to StatCounter's third-party market share data released in April 2021, Google Chrome controlled 67.55% of the desktop browser market, up from 67.14% in March. The growth rate was smaller, but Chrome, on the other hand, was the only big browser that didn't decline in April.

Safari, available only on macOS, for example, dropped from 10.11% in March to 9.85% in April, although it remained the second most popular desktop browser. Of course, offering it as a native macOS browser would definitely help, but on the other hand, Microsoft Edge is still the default browser on Windows 10, but it still loses market share.

Edge dropped from 8.03 percent in March to 7.96 percent in April. Although the decline was small, it still managed to take third place in the desktop browser competition. While its market share has edged down from 7.95% to 7.78%, Firefox is still very close.

Like Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge is now a cross-platform browser, so in addition to Windows 10, it can also be used on Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, macOS and Linux. Earlier this week, Microsoft officially upgraded Microsoft Edge for Linux to the beta channel, although at this time it is unclear when a stable version will be released.

Plus, you can download Microsoft Edge for Android and iPhone from both app stores.
