NBU's full name Netbackup is a product of Symantec's acquisition of veritas, which is powerful and is said to be the ancestor of the backup world.

The architecture of Netbackup:

Nbu master server can be stored directly or managed through media server to back up its own data and client-side data resources.

NBU includes Server/Media/Client software:

Install the Server software on the server that needs to connect to a storage device, such as a tape library or CD library.

Install the Client software on the machine that needs to provide data for backup.

The NetBackup master server (Master Server) manages and formulates the backup strategy of the whole network and controls all backup jobs, which is the core of centralized management. Master Server manages storage devices, controls backup / archive policies, and restore operations. At the same time, Master Server has the functions of Media Server and Client.

Media Server only connects storage devices, provides data offloading, and does not control backup / archiving strategies and recovery operations. Its role is to spread the burden on the network and improve backup efficiency. It also has the function of Client, and Media Server is only responsible for managing the storage devices directly connected to it.

"Client sends backups to accept recovery data through LAN, LAN-Free, or Server LAN-Free." Back up basic files and unstructured data.

LAN backup method:

Client transfers backup data from DISK storage transfers data to the storage media on the Master Server side through LAN transfer

2. LAN-Free backup method:

Media transfers data resources from its own mounted storage device and transfers backup via SAN to its own mounted backup storage media.

3. Server-Free backup method:

The disk array transfers data resources over SAN Gateway to the peer DLT tape library backup storage media.
