Here are two concepts to learn about region and zones

Region

All AWS services are differentiated using region.

It should be noted that data and services vary from region to region, such as US East (N. Virginia) us-east-1 and US East (Ohio) us-east-2, which are common in the eastern United States.

The above two are different region. Before US East (Ohio) us-east-2 was not available, most of us used US East (N. Virginia) us-east-1.

When we use S3 to upload data, we need to specify scop when we use API to upload data. This Scop is what we call region here. If region is not assigned, the API of S3 will report an error when uploading data, and you are required to set region.

Zone

A different Zone is used under each region.

We can think of Zone as a separate physical data room. Usually, after AWS defines region, there are three zone below.

This number is not fixed, with a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 6.

Knowledge point

AWS setting region can be thought of as combining one or more data centers to form a virtual area.

We can think of region as an abstraction of Zone. The direct services of each region are different, in other words, some services are not available in some region.

Zone is a lower-level data center, and the purpose of using zone is to avoid data loss and damage caused by power outages or other natural disasters. So each Zone is physically isolated.

For ordinary users, the most common situation you need to face is Region, because when you call API, you will be asked to specify Scop. This Scop must correspond to the Region of the service you installed, otherwise API will report an error.

Console adjusts Region

In the console of AWS, you can switch to Region.

Log in to the console of AWS. In the upper right corner of the console, you can see the name of Region.

Switch by selecting Region by clicking the arrow and then displaying the list of available Region in the pop-up list.
