The Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information at the University of Innsbruck, Austria, selected an arbitrary waveform generator (AWG) to generate a wide variety of signals for research. Since a wide variety of experiments will be used, it is important to have an AWG that is easy to program using PC so that the output can be easily used for each different purpose. Spectrum m4i.6631-x8 was selected because the PCI Express card can be inserted directly into a PC and then used directly.
"It's highly configurable," explains Christine Maier, a researcher at the institute. "Two AWG channels, select trigger option, external clock input, multi-and-gated replay mode, cycling function, and even the possibility to put two trigger inputs through logic gates. Combined with high resolution and a sampling rate of 1.25 GS/s for our current projects, flexible programmability to select the required sampling rate, in the future we can solve the problem with only one instrument. "
The first application is an application of multi-frequency signals in the radio frequency range. Each frequency component is implemented using a sine function. Beat signals are generated to simultaneously solve the problem of single ions in ion trap quantum simulators.
Christine Maier said,"We are doing quantum simulations of trapped, cooled calcium ions and the need to process each ion in a linear string. To achieve this goal, we pass a laser beam through an acousto-optic deflector (AOD). The frequency of the RF signal generated determines the deflection angle of the laser beam, which encodes the ions. AWG (Arbitrary Waveform Generator) can generate signals at multiple frequencies, so we can now control multiple ions simultaneously in a string. One of the advantages is that the experiment is faster because we don't need to address each ion individually in cycles. It also prevents us from studying such a completely new field of study, and we only need to study the undisturbed energy transport in ion chains. However, by compiling individual ions of arbitrary intensity, we can now create arbitrary barriers and study energy transport in disordered quantum systems. AWG (Arbitrary Waveform Generator Card) even allows programming to change voltages to study dynamic disorder phenomena. "
A second application is to cancel unwanted mixing terms by destructive interference, such as those generated when multiple frequency signals are applied to an acousto-optic modulator. "Applying RF signals to acoustooptic crystals is a fundamental technology in our lab," she said. "When multiple frequencies are used, aliasing will rise and eventually map to optical signals and act on ions. This raises two problems: first, you lose the power you want at a particular frequency, and second, mixing conditions can reach the resonance frequency of the ion chain and destroy the quantum model you want to simulate. Spectrum's AWG (Arbitrary Waveform Generator) allows us to eliminate these doubts through real-time measurements and feedback loops. "
