Shulou(Shulou.com)06/02 Report--

Based on the Linux Windows how to understand, I believe that many inexperienced people do not know what to do, so this paper summarizes the causes of the problem and solutions, through this article I hope you can solve this problem.

Eric S. Raymond, one of the founders of open source, believes that the future of Windows is about the Linux kernel. A few days ago, developer and author Eric S. Raymond (ESR) proposed that "We are nearing the final stage of desktop warfare. Who's the winner? maybe Windows runs on Linux."

We have long thought that Microsoft is considering migrating the Windows interface to the Linux kernel to run. Why? "WSL (Linux's Windows subsystem) allows unmodified Linux binaries to run under Windows 10," Raymond said. "there are no simulations, no fill layers, they just load and run." Indeed, you can now run standard Linux programs on WSL2 without any problems.

This is because Linux is about to become a first-class citizen on the Windows desktop. Multiple Linux distributions starting with Ubuntu,Red Hat Fedora and SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop (SLED) now run smoothly on WSL2. That's because Microsoft has replaced the WSL1 translation layer with WSL2, which converts Linux kernel calls into Windows calls. With WSL2, Microsoft's own Linux kernel can run on a stripped-down version of the Hyper-V hypervisor.

That's not all. With the latest Windows 10 Insider Preview build 20211, you can now access Linux file systems, such as ext4, from the Windows file manager and PowerShell. In addition, Microsoft developers make it easy to run Linux graphics applications on Windows.

In addition to Microsoft's efforts to integrate Windows desktops with Linux, Raymond points out that other vendors are also trying to make Windows applications easier to run on Linux. He highlighted Valve's Proton, an Win-based compatibility layer developed for running Windows Steam games on Linux. "the thing about games is that they are the most demanding stress tests on the Windows simulation layer, far more than commercial software." If you can run Windows games on Linux, why not use Windows business applications?

He also correctly observed that Microsoft's cash flow is no longer dependent on Windows, but on its Azure cloud products. By the way, there are more Linux instances running than Windows Server instances.

So why does Microsoft continue to invest money in the notoriously troublesome Windows kernel (more than 50 serious bugs were fixed in last Tuesday's patch) when Microsoft can use the free Windows kernel?

That's a good question. He thinks Microsoft can do the math and switch to Linux.

I think he is right. Besides his point of view, there are other views. Microsoft already wants you to replace existing PC-based software, such as Office 2019, with software-as-a-service (SaaS) programs such as Office. Microsoft also encourages you to transfer voice, video, chat and text messages to Microsoft's Azure Communications Service (ACS), even if you don't use Teams.

For the SaaS project, Microsoft doesn't care what operating system you are running. Whether you run Office 365 on Windows, Chromebook, or Office 365 on Linux, they will be paid.

I think there are two possible paths for Windows in the future. First, it is Windows based on Linux. This makes perfect economic sense. Alternatively, existing Windows desktops are replaced by Windows virtual desktops or other desktop as a service (DaaS) products.

Of course, even if Microsoft adopts the DaaS approach entirely (and I think it will), it still needs a general-purpose basic operating system. Just like Chrome OS, it will provide an operating system that is only large enough to run browsers to run browsers with minimal other local resources.

Google chose to use Linux as the basis for Chrome OS to save costs and improve security. This works very well for Google. It can serve Microsoft-let's look back at the past-and call it Lindows.

What is Linux system Linux is a free-to-use and free-spread UNIX-like operating system, is a POSIX-based multi-user, multi-task, multi-threaded and multi-CPU operating system, using Linux can run major Unix tools, applications and network protocols.
