What happens in a few days when you ask a bunch of crazy developers and entrepreneurs to focus on environmental sustainability? As shown this weekend, you will get some interesting applications.

Organizers held the first Cleanweb hackathon in San Francisco this week and announced the winner of the application development competition yesterday.

According to investor SunilPaul, one of the organizers, the overall winner of the event was the TACO team (total cost of ownership), which showed the prototype of the Chrome browser plug-in, showing how much electricity people use for electronics and other products when shopping.

The purpose of this two-day "hackathon" is to provide ideas for applications aimed at making effective use of natural resources.

Exhibitions of other winners and participants show that the concept can take different forms, from better tools to improve daily commuting to systems that exchange fresh food online.

According to media sponsor Earth2Tech, the winner of the award is Dr. Wattson. The application uses the API of Tendril, a smart grid company, to make recommendations for better household energy plans.

The winning "bad hacker" comes from Tomato, which creates visualization based on energy, health and resources in different states, as well as toxic killers, and uses EPA data to visualize the location of toxic chemicals.

In addition to Tendril's utility data API, developers can also get some data sets about energy from the Department of Energy, as well as data about the company's sustainability, transportation and environment.

Other examples include Greenly, a life cycle analysis tool for small businesses and craftsmen to calculate the environmental footprint of products, GROMunity to connect backyard farmers, and the Tendril team application, which turns energy conservation into a game between regions of the United States. See the complete list here.

It is not clear whether the code written this weekend will be in the form of commercial products, but Cleanweb Hackathon has proved that the use of information technology and mobile devices is a rich area that can make people's daily life more convenient and green.
