The updatedb command is used to create or update database files necessary for the slocate/locate command.

The updatedb command takes a long time to execute because it traverses the directory tree of the entire system and writes all the file information to the slocate/locate database file. Note: slocate itself has a database that stores information about files and directories in the system.

Use the updatedb command to create or update the database used by locate. If the database already exists, its data is reused to avoid rereading directories that have not changed. Updatedb is usually run daily by cron to update the default database.

Syntax format: updatedb [parameters]

Common parameters:

-o ignore the default database file and update the slocate database of the specified directory with the specified slocate database file-U-v shows the detailed process of execution

Detect a non-existent file file.txt:

[root@linuxcool ~] # locate file.txt

Use the-U parameter to specify the directory where you want to update the slocate database:

[root@linuxcool ~] # updatedb-U / root/file/

Create or update the mlocate database:

[root@linuxcool ~] # updatedb

Create a mlocate database, scan only the / etc directory, and write the database to the db_file file:
