Qualcomm's flagship Snapdragon 888 SoC has finally arrived. It is equipped with a new integrated 5G modem, supports 6GHz and networks below mmWave, and the ISP is 35% faster than the previous generation. The chipset is likely to be unveiled with Xiaomi's Mi 11 series soon.

Fans and enthusiasts have been waiting for Qualcomm's flagship SoC, which will power most flagship smartphones in 2021. The standard naming convention stipulates that it is called Qualcomm Snapdragon 875. However, Qualcomm was a bit of a surprise. The chipmaker just announced that it would change its name to Qualcomm Snapdragon 888. Considering that numbers are considered lucky in some cultures, although the name seems a bit out of date, it still makes sense.

Previous leaks told us that Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 would return to its predecessor's 1-3-4 core configuration. We should learn more about the chip as soon as possible, because Qualcomm does not disclose any information about the inside of the chip. However, we confirm that the chipset will be used with Qualcomm's shiny new X60 5G modem, which will support below 6 gigahertz and millimeter wave networks. Other 5G related features include support for independent and non-independent (SA and NSA) networks, support for multiple SIM cards, etc.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 is also equipped with a new AI engine that can perform up to 26 trillion operations per second (TOPS). This will greatly improve camera-centric features such as AI-driven portrait mode and color correction. The new NPU will undoubtedly help OEMs adjust optimization features on their devices, such as optimizing battery use and adjusting screen refresh rates.

In terms of GPUs, Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 is expected to run adrenaline 660 (tentative) GPUs. The details are very similar to the core configuration of the chip, which will be disclosed later. However, Qualcomm claims that the Snapdragon 888's image signal processor (ISP) is 35 per cent faster than its predecessor. Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 will power flagship products from one plus, Asustek, Sony, Realme, Oppo, Vivo and other companies in 2021. The chipset is expected to be unveiled with the upcoming Xiaomi Mi 11.
