5-minute crash Oracle 12.2 RAC expert

Oracle 12c has proposed a number of new solutions and features for RAC. These solutions and features make it more advantageous for Oracle clusters to help enterprise users get on the cloud in the era of cloud and big data. Today we're going to learn about Oracle RAC's best practices on the latest 12c Release 2 release.

This article will focus on Standalone Cluster and Domain Service Cluster, the latest two deployment methods of clusters in 12.2.The contents are divided into the following modules:

1. 12.2 Cluster configuration options

2. Installation and deployment of Standalone Cluster

3. Installation and deployment of Domain Service Cluster

4. Create a cluster member profile

5. Create a member service cluster

6. Answer frequently asked questions

Oracle 12.2 Cluster configuration options

In Oracle12.2, there are mainly two innovative schemes in the configuration of clusters.

One is Standalone Cluster.

In this scheme, each cluster node stores a part of the shared data, and the collection of these data constitutes the shared data of the cluster, which is stored on the shared storage that all nodes can access.

The architecture of Standalone Cluster is as follows:

1. Standalone Cluster centrally manages and maintains GI (including ASM storage) and contains independent management repositories.

2. Shared storage (data) is distributed on each node in the way of slicing, whether it is block storage or NAS, each node can access the storage slicing of strange nodes under the condition of ensuring data consistency.

3. Nodes in Standalone Cluster can be deployed as Hub nodes or Leaf nodes. Deploy the read write instance as a Hub node and the Read only instance as a Leaf node.

The second latest deployment scenario proposed in 12.2 is Domain Service Cluster.

Oracle Cluster Domain provides new deployment options for the cluster architecture. It provides a standardized and centralized deployment of RAC under private database cloud, and can optimize RAC.

Its basic structure is as follows:

The content of Domain Service Cluster consists of:

1. One or more nodes form a domain service cluster (DSC)

2. One or more nodes form a database member cluster (Database Member Cluster)

3. (optional) one or more nodes constitute an application member node (Application Member Cluster)

Domain Service Cluster

One or more nodes can be configured as a Domain Service Cluster. And provide the following features:

1. Centralized grid infrastructure management repository (providing MGMTDB for each cluster in Oracle Cluster Domain)

2. Trace File Analyzer (TFA) service for target diagnostic data collection in Oracle Clusterware and Oracle databases

3. Merge Oracle ASM storage management services

4. Optional Rapid Home configuration (RHP) service for installing clusters, as well as configuring, patching and upgrading Oracle Grid Infrastructure and Oracle Database homes. When configuring an Oracle domain service cluster, you can also choose to configure Rapid Home Provisioning Server.

These centralized services can be utilized by database member clusters in cluster Domain.

Storage access in Domain Service Cluster

ASM in DSC can provide centralized storage management services.

Member clusters (MC) can access sharded storage on DSC in two ways:

1) directly physically connect to sharded storage for access

2) access through the network path using ASM IO Service

Note: all MC nodes must access sharded storage in the same way.

Classification of member clusters:

In DSC, member clusters can be divided into the following categories:

The first is a cluster of database members that use local storage

In such clusters, their storage is not shared with other member clusters in the DSC. The cluster still uses the GIMR and TFA services provided by DSC.

The second is the application member cluster.

This kind of cluster consists of one or more nodes used to deploy the application, and there may or may not be local storage in the cluster, depending on the application requirements. Clusters can still use the GIMR and TFA services provided by DSC.

The third is the database member cluster that uses the fragmented storage service provided by DSC.

Such clusters can use most of the services provided in DSC, including fragmented storage services (which do not need to be directly connected to storage), ASM services, ASM I TFA O services, as well as GIMR and TFA services mentioned above.

In the third category of member clusters, database member clusters can also be directly connected to fragmented storage in DSC. As follows:

In this case, the member cluster can access the metadata through the ASM instance on DSC, and the read and write of the second team of data can directly access the shared storage.

Installation and deployment of Standalone Cluster

The detailed steps for standalone deployment are as follows (only special steps are listed due to space constraints):

Select the cluster configuration type as: Standalone Cluster

The cluster node can be configured as a Hub or Leaf node, but if it is a leaf node, there is no need to configure a virtual hostname.

Install Standalone cluster

Install Domain Services Cluster

Select the configuration type as Domain Services Cluster

The configuration of GNS is required, but the configuration of its subdomains is optional

If you fail in the installation and need to reinstall, remember to use the # ls mod | grep afd command to check whether the driver is running.

Executing dd on a device protected by afd is ignored silently

The creation of the member cluster profile and the installation of Member Service Cluster are omitted here. You can download ppt for learning reference.

Why does MGMT DB need so much space?

The space required for the deployment of the two clusters is as follows:

These spaces will be used to:

1. Oracle 12c Release 2 AHF feature (Autonomous Health Framework Autonomous Health Framework) collects and stores diagnostic data for OS and DB in MGMT.

InDSC, one PDB per member cluster is provisioned to store member clusterdiagnostics data

2. In InDSC, one PDB for each member cluster is set to store diagnostic data for member clusters.

Thedata is used by AHF components like cluster health advisor to both prevent andhelp diagnose issues

3. AHF components (such as cluster health advisor cluster health advisors) can process the relevant data to prevent and help diagnose problems.
