In this issue, the editor will bring you about how to design in the open source technology community in Serverless. The article is rich in content and analyzes and narrates it from a professional point of view. I hope you can get something after reading this article.

How to design in the open source technology community

Eager to explore a new world, I traveled around and eventually moved to Buenos Aires. In the workplace, I have grown from a professional designer, first as an artistic director and then as a design director. But I am eager to break through and try something new.

Design in the Serverless team

I finally joined this startup called Serverless. From the beginning, I was faced with the daunting task of creating a new brand identity for the company while paying tribute to the past. The new logo must be a perfect blend of old and new logos, and metaphysical factors such as the open source community, technical documentation, conference presentations, videos, and even "atmosphere" must be taken into account.

Now, I have finished this task. In this article, I will show the entire design process for designers who want to learn more about how to create reliable brand logos, whether from scratch or to improve existing ones.

Growth design system

The first thing to keep in mind about design is that design is designed to achieve a certain purpose. Its role is to build a community, tell a story, and increase product awareness and usage. Therefore, it is always changing. Designers must quickly adapt to the external environment and internal needs of the company.

My design process draws inspiration from the growth of Ryan Gum and follows some familiar principles:

Ideate (Conception)

Prioritize (prioritize)

Test (Test)

Analyze (Analytical)

Optimize (optimized)

Rethink (reflection)

In other words, logo is a structure, a cycle of continuous development and self-reshaping. When you go through this cycle, ask yourself two questions:

1. What is the next step in brand development?

Design must continue to evolve, and you have to figure out how to do it without losing its essence and discrimination. Development does not mean to erase the past, but to build on it. In the process, don't be afraid to try. Without a really bad attempt, everything can get better.

Without a really bad attempt, everything can get better.

two。 Can this design be expressed?

Design is not only an art, but also needs to achieve the goal for the company. In order to do this, as a designer, you need to understand the purpose of the design and how to achieve it.

This is the purpose of a good design: it establishes the visual language that presents the image of the company.

Excellent brands are practical.

With this in mind, let's discuss the usefulness of implementing brand design throughout the organization and the issues that need to be paid attention to in the process.

Double-check what you present

As technology changes, new platforms are born, opening the way for new types of behaviors and interactions. We find ourselves in a situation where development is not a matter of choice, but a matter of survival.

This forces us to create new communication rules to follow the situational logic of each platform. If something fails, the responsibility lies not in the message, but because the way we communicate doesn't work.

For example, the other day I discussed with the Serverless growth team how to diversify the content we share on Twitter. As a person who pays attention to vision, my first idea is to use more pictures, videos and motion pictures!

This is not a bad idea! As I said before, there are no really bad attempts. But what I didn't take into account is that the tweet contains pictures to make the link appear as blue text, rather than expanding into a visual card. Links are easily overlooked when they are mixed with topic tags. It may eventually lead to fewer participation rates and fewer hits. This is not good!

Obviously, we still use many types of content on social media, but it is important for designers to understand the main interaction patterns of each platform and find ways to make our information as attractive as possible, taking into account their limitations.

No matter how exquisite the picture is, only when the content can be responded can a message attract the most attention and ultimately create brand value.

Adventure, development, proof, analysis and reflection

You must be able to look at your work critically. Your ideal design should be able to make people stop, take off their headphones and look sideways. If you pass by your design work on the street, will you stop? Please answer honestly. If the answer is no, you have to start the design again with humility.

In order to design an impressive work, you need not only to take risks and try, but also to listen frankly to feedback and understand the feasible and infeasible aspects of the design. After I began to lead the design communication of the growth team, I asked the whole team to give feedback on my design. They can always point out what I didn't find, so that we can show the best results for every open design.

For example, I once designed a customized newsletter for the Serverless platform bulletin, and I spent a lot of time customizing illustrations to highlight its features. To be honest, I am really satisfied with these illustrations. But team members also put forward some useful ideas that dashboard's product diagrams should be used to make people more impressed.

I have to admit, this is to the point.

Of course, feedback is not always easy to accept, but it's important. Everyone needs to do this well:

No matter how good your work is, there is always a lot to learn and a lot to forget. That's why top athletes and musicians need coaches even at their peak.

-Farheen Gani "Making feedback work for you"

It is important to accept feedback, and it is also important to know how to request feedback. Make sure your design allows people to understand their concerns. Tell you about your current design stage: is it just beginning or is it making final adjustments? This helps you get the help you need with minimal overhead.

The above suggestions come from my own experience as a designer, but I think they are helpful to various other types of characters. Therefore, why not take a risk and try to make some changes and find ways to improve and improve constantly.

UI/UX of Serverless

At Serverless, we uphold the development of corporate culture, if there is no change, it will be encouraged.

We attach importance to the enterprising spirit, for me, the courage to forge ahead is a kind of quality and exciting.

This is our attitude towards design in Serverless.
