A new machine learning tool developed by computer scientists at the University of Alberta is screened through millions of tweets to help understand health and health trends in Alberta and Canada.

"We use machine learning to determine the location of tweets, the health dimensions they focus on, and the emotions expressed in each tweet," said Osmazaian, a computing scientist. "if we can do that, we can better understand the actual health and health of living in a particular place."

The tool, called Grebe, leverages the power of machine learning to help the health surveillance networks of the Canadian Department of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States, which often rely on self-reporting or from medical institutions such as doctors' offices and hospitals.

"Public health experts are interested in learning about specific cities or provinces," Zaian said. "although surveys are a useful form of information collection, self-reporting may be unreliable or inaccurate. In addition to self-reporting, the tool also allows public health experts to study people's behavior."

Scientists use machine learning to identify the six dimensions of health-physical, emotional, professional, social, mental and intellectual-as well as the emotions and related locations expressed in each tweet. The project began in Edmonton and then expanded to all parts of Alberta and has been applied to all provinces in Canada.

"the tool allows experts to use another medium-in this case Twitter-to verify trends they find elsewhere, such as through surveys and other studies," Zain said.

"our goal is not to find trends ourselves. Instead, our goal is to build a tool for public health professionals and sociologists to analyze these trends."

Once completed, Grebe will be open to the public and other researchers through open access.
