When patrolling, an oracle database operating system / var/log/message log contains a large number of the following warning:

Aug 4 09:18:23 your_hostname kernel: EXT4-fs warning (device sda5): ext4_dx_add_entry:2024: Directory index full!

Aug 4 09:18:25 your_hostname kernel: EXT4-fs warning (device sda5): ext4_dx_add_entry:2024: Directory index full!

The reasons for warning are as follows:

There are more than 64k subdirectories and files in a single directory.

After investigation, there are 9113975 .aud files in the adump directory of Oracle. After deleting the files, warning is no longer generated.

Commands are involved:

1) count the number of files under the current folder

Ls-l | grep "^ -" | wc-l

2) count the number of directories under the current folder

Ls-l | grep "^ d" | wc-l

3) count the number of files in the current folder, including those in the subfolder

Ls-lR | grep "^ -" | wc-l

4) count the number of directories in the folder, including those in the subfolder

Ls-lR | grep "^ d" | wc-l
