The Raspberry Pi Foundation officially launched Raspberry Pi 4 Model B on June 24.

Raspberry pie is a world-famous basic computing microcomputer, which is sought after and loved by developers, programmers, geeks and other people all over the world.

After 3 years of development, this generation of Raspberry Pi 4 Model B has finally upgraded its memory (RAM) from 1GB to 4GB, introducing USB 3.0, supporting dual screen 4K output, faster CPU and GPU, and supporting H.265 decoding.

Specifically, this update is mainly reflected in the following aspects:

1. Using quad-core 64-bit ARM Cortex-A72 architecture CPU, the model is Broadcom BCM2711 SoC, and the main frequency is 1.5GHz, which is three times higher than that of the previous generation.

2. Memory: 1GB, 2GB or 4GB LPDDR4 (depending on the model).

3. Connectivity: dual-band IEEE 802.11ac wireless + Bluetooth 5.0,Gigabit Ethernet, 2 × USB 3.0,2 × USB 2.0ports. GPIO: forward compatible with the standard 40-pin raspberry pie.

4. Video and sound: 2 × micro-HDMI output (4kp60 or 4kp30), 2-channel MIPI DSI display port, 2-channel MIPI CSI camera port, 4-pole stereo audio and composite video port. Support dual monitors, resolution up to 4K8, VideoCore VI GPU, support OpenGL ES 3.x

5. Multimedia: support hardware decoding HEVC / H.265 (4kp60 decoding), AVC / H.264 (1080p60 decoding / 1080p30 encoding), OpenGL ES 3.0 GPU.

6. Power input: 5V DC (USB-C, 3A), GPIO connector supports 5V DC @ 3A, or Power over Ethernet (separate PoE HAT is required).

7. Fully compatible with early raspberry pie products

Compared with the previous generation of raspberry pie 3B +, there is a direct and obvious improvement.

In terms of price, 1GB is 35 US dollars, 2GB 45 US dollars, 4GB 55 US dollars, and the desktop kit with keyboard, SD card and so on is 105 pounds.

Although the price of the 4GB is higher than before, Eben Upton, co-founder of the raspberry pie foundation, says raspberry pie is still unprofitable. after all, it is not realistic to achieve a 4GB RAM at $35.

After this upgrade, you can use the raspberry pie 4 as a complete desktop computer, because the official provides a complete set of desktop accessories.

Eben Upton, co-founder of raspberry pie, said: "Raspberry pie 4 is designed to provide everyone with a rich multimedia PC experience, and by providing most users with a 'just right' level of performance, we can achieve this at 1/10 of the cost of traditional desktop PC."

When it comes to whether it can replace the clunky PC, Upton jokes that at least you can get rid of the old AMD at home.

In addition, raspberry pie 4 will remain in production at least until February 2026.
